IMA condemns attack on doctor Panchkula, September 26 In a written statement, the IMA president, Dr Neeraj Nagpal, said it was not possible to insert a six-inch-long clamp or scissors into the abdomen through a one-and-a-half inch long incision given for appendicitis. Replying to allegations of medical negligence levelled by family members who found a pair of scissors in the ashes of Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Durga Nagar who had died on September 22. Jaswinder was operated upon for appendicitis a month before his death by a doctor from Mahesh Nagar, Ambala. The president, IMA, clarified that following treatment at DMC, the clamp may have been applied to a urinary catheter following the removal of the bag or on to a CVP pipe, or if an autopsy was performed or these could simply be in the clothes of the deceased at the time of cremation. He condemned the subsequent attack by mob on the doctor’s nursing home.

ICMR programme
for expectant mothers Chandigarh, September 26 “Many children are born with genetic disorders which can lead to diseases like thalassaemia, beta-thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia. These diseases are not curable and a life long expensive treatment is required,” said Prof N. K. Ganguly Director General of ICMR, New Delhi, while talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of the Foundation Day celebrations of the CSIR at the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) here today. Under the programme, the pregnant women are counselled about the option of going in for abortion in case the baby has genetic disorders which can not be cured after its birth. “In case a child is born with thalassaemia, which require frequent blood transfusion, we are providing iron tablets at cheaper rates,” said Prof Ganguly. Focusing on decreasing the infant mortality rate in the country, Prof Ganguly talked about the launching of a major trail of the vaccine of H-B influenza, an infection among the children up to the age of six months. Also, the new Oral Rehydration Solution, which includes zinc, has been introduced under the various programmes to reduce infant mortality rate. |
