Protest against spurious seed
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 23
Activists of the Bharti Kisan Union (Ugrahan) today raised slogans in front of a local seed store for allegedly selling spurious Bt cotton seeds to farmers. They were also joined by many others who had come to visit the kisan mela at PAU here today.

Mr Darshan Singh Kuhli, district president of the outfit, alleged that the Garg Seed Corporation had supplied spurious Bt cotton seed, following which the crops had failed and farmers had suffered losses. He said they had brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner but nothing came out of it.

The union had also taken up the issue with the Seed Sellers Association, which admitted that the farmers had suffered losses of Rs 15,000 per acre. As many as 70 acres of crop had to be ploughed in in this district alone, he pointed out.

He said the association had gone back on its promise of compensating the farmers.

Mr Hardeep Singh Tallewal, secretary of the union, said it was a matter of concern that various MNCs were hand in glove with seed stores.

Compensation for crop loss demanded
Our Correspondent

Jagraon, September 23
Electric wires passing through fields often produce sparks or fall on the crops, leading to fire, causing loss to farmers. In many cases these lines have become old and are in a state of disrepair.

This was stated by Mr Gurcharan Singh, president of the local unit of the Kirti Kisan Union (KKU), in a press note released here today. He alleged the Punjab State Electricity Board did not compensate the farmers for such losses.

Farmers of Rasulpur and Bhamipura, who suffered losses five months ago, were fed up with the board as the officials concerned were not accepting their fault, he said.

He demanded Rs 16,000 per acre as compensation for these farmers and threatened to stage a protest in front of the office of the XEN at Raikot on September 30 in case the demand was not met.

HC notice to police, complainant
Dispute between brothers over property
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 23
The controversy over land worth crores at Jhande village fails to die down, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court admitting a petition for quashing a case registered against the accused and issuing a notice of motion to the local police and the complainant in the case.

The police had registered a case against Jatinder Singh and his wife Surinder Kaur under Sections 344 and 34 of the IPC for illegally confining his father on the statement of his brother Manjinder Singh. Both brothers hail from Jhande village while Jatinder Singh is presently living at Aiyali Kalan village in a rented house.

The court now issued a notice of motion for September 27 to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana, the Station House Officer, Sadar police station, and Manjinder Singh, the complainant. Jatinder Singh, in his petition, alleged that the Ludhiana police was trying to pick up Amrik Singh, his father, despite knowing that he had been admitted to hospital.

According to the FIR, Manjinder Singh had alleged that his father had been staying with his brother and sister-in-law for the past many years. He had added that on August 24, the couple drugged the old man with an injection, due to which he became mentally upset. He alleged that the accused wanted to grab the property of his father by getting his signatures on a deed or a will. A case had been registered following his complaint.

Both brothers had been levelling allegations and counter-allegations against one another that they were eyeing five acres worth Rs 2 crore owned by their father. While Jatinder Singh had been alleging that his brother, supported by some villagers, had been trying to grab the land of his father, who had disowned Manjinder some years ago, Manjinder had been alleging that his father was being illegally kept in Jatinder’s custody.

Jatinder had been alleging that his brother was trying to kidnap his father after he had learnt that he had suffered from a neurological disorder. He added that his father was suffering from HSV encephalitis and had been admitted to the CMC Hospital for some days.

He alleged that on August 24, his brother, daughter-in-law and cousin visited their rented house to enquire about the health of his father. He claimed that when they came to know that he was not well, they conspired to kidnap him to make him sign some papers.

There had been various inquiries by the district administration in the case. Most of the reports had been in favour of Jatinder Singh. Most of the villagers and the sarpanch of Jhande village were supporting Manjinder Singh.

Jatinder Singh, in his petition, had attached a certificate by Dr Mohit Walia of the Department of Neurology, CMC Hospital, issued on August 17, that Amrik Singh was admitted with a diagnosis of HSV encephalitis from July 21 to August 3 to CMC Hospital. His condition had improved, but he had significant residual cognitive impairment, which might improve over months, the medical certificate had noted.

Court summons SHO, ASI
Legal Correspondent

Ludhiana, September 23
A local court has issued summons to Manjit Singh, SHO of the Division 3 police station, ASI Pritpal Singh, Bhushan Kumar Jain of Aggarwal Market, Mochpura Bazar, and his son Navneet in connection with a petition seeking the initiation of contempt of court proceedings against them for disobeying court orders.

Issuing the summons, Mr Inderjit Kaushik, Additional Sessions Judge, has directed them to appear in the court on September 29 personally or through their counsel. The orders were passed following a petition filed by Mr Satish Kumar Jain.

It has been claimed that the court, vide its order dated September 8, had directed the SHO or the IO of the Division 3 police station that in case a case was registered on the basis of any statement or complaint of Bhushan Kumar Jain and Navneet, a three-day prior notice be given in the event of arrest of the applicants.

It was alleged that despite receipt of court orders, their opponents had conspired with the policemen named above and got them booked under Sections 107 and 151 of the CrPC. The complainants were detained at the police station throughout the night of September 9 and were produced before the SDM the next day at about 3 pm.

In the petition, it was also claimed that the SDM discharged the applicants and their relatives by holding that neither the complainants, nor the investigation officer, was present and as such, it seemed that they did not want to pursue the case. The complainants added that non-prosecution showed that the intention was to harass and humiliate them.

It was alleged by Satish Jain that his son Deepak had a dispute with Bhushan Kumar Jain and Navneet Jain, but they were unnecessarily harassed. He claimed that the police pressurised them to pay Rs 8 lakh to the party which had moved the application against them.
