Mystery shrouds kidnapping of Mufti’s kin

Srinagar, September 23
A drama of kidnapping a close kin of the Chief Minister another resident from their home town of Beijbehara ended after several hours today with the seizure of a snatched vehicle.

The police, however, claims there was no such incident. The two youths happened to be among “some others” taken for questioning over the snatching of a car in the area. The two were not in any way linked to the snatching of the vehicle and had been set free, the police said.

It all began when a group of gunmen in civvies took away two persons, Mufti Sarwar, son of Mufti Shariefuddin, first cousin of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and another person, Muzammil Kakroo, from Baba Mohalla, Beijbehara in Anantnag district, this morning. They were reportedly taken away in a Maruti Zen car around 10 am. Their relatives informed the police about the incident.

The police, according to a local news agency, during checking of vehicles on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, seized the snatched vehicle with seven BSF men in civvies. It reported that the BSF men, who were also manning a Gypsy with the two “kidnapped” youth in it, managed to flee and reached one of their camps in the nearby Pulwama district.

The news agency reported that a case of kidnapping had been registered against 8th Bn of the BSF. The seven BSF persons held had been handed over to the authorities concerned.

The DIG, Anantnag-Pulwama, denied there was any case of kidnapping by the security personnel. He said the police was looking for the car lifters who had snatched a Maruti Zen from a contractor in the area. He said the two youths happened to be there while the policemen seized the car near Chechakote on the highway. The two youth were handed over to the local police and later to their families at Beijbehara.

BJP holds protest against Cong ‘betrayal’
Tribune News Service

Jammu, September 23
The BJP organised a procession to protest against the failure of the ruling Congress to meet its commitment of implementing the report of the Wazir Commission here today.

The commission had recommended the creation of three new districts in Jammu division.

The party also protested against the rejection of the report by PCC chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed.

The procession that was led by Mr Kavinder Gupta, district president of the party, raised slogans against the PDP-Congress coalition government for “betraying” the people of Jammu.

Mr Gupta accused the Congress ministers of playing into the hands of their “Kashmiri masters” and harming the interests of Jammu. The Congress had always played with the sentiments of the people of Jammu, he alleged.

He pointed out that the implementation of the report was included in the common minimum programme of the state government.

The government had also failed to set up a regional council for Jammu to safeguard its interests, he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Bhim Singh, chairman of the Panthers Party, a partner in the ruling coalition, has urged Ms Sonia Gandhi to convene a meeting of coalition partners in the state to sort out the conflict that has arisen following the “burial” of the common minimum programme by the Congress and the PDP.

Sonia to visit Leh on Sept 30

Srinagar, September 23
Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi would pay a day’s visit to Leh on September 30.

Her engagements in Leh include the inauguration of a Pashmina unit set up by the Wool Board and a public meeting, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress chief Peerzada Mohammad Sayed told reporters here today.

Mr Sayed replied in negative when asked whether her visit was to iron out differences that had cropped up between the coalition partners. Denying there were differences among the coalition partners, he said the Congress chief’s visit was as per the schedule chalked out earlier.

Asked about the remarks by Jammu-based Congress leaders that they rued party high command’s decision to hand over chief ministership to Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the state Congress chief said the views expressed by the leaders were not the opinion of the party.

“I do not agree with them. It is their personal opinion,” he said, adding the Congress always sacrificed power for the cause of the nation. — PTI
