ABVP activists burn Principal's effigy
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 21
The local unit of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a demonstration and burnt the effigy of Principal of the DAV Public School, BRS Nagar, in front of school premises to protest against what the ABVP vice-President, Mr Sandeep Kapoor, called "use of unfair methods in the recently held elections to the Punjab University Senate for the graduate constituency".

The ABVP has accused the school Principal, Mr R.S Patial, of "terrorising the students and their parents to cast votes in favour of his sponsored candidate Dr Satnam Kaur". Students, the ABVP said, were strictly told to take their parents to polling booths and get their attendance registered at DAV's booth.

ABVP, Ludhiana, Convener, Mr Rajat Sood, released copies of a notice issued on school letterhead, signed by the Principal, Mr. R.S Patial, to parents seeking vote for Dr Satnam Kaur.

A month before the elections the parents were again told to provide details of sure voters with their names, addresses and phone numbers. This note was written on the school diary of each and every student. In another note in the diary the parents were instructed to phone the class teacher to get necessary instructions. On the diary itself the parents were instructed to vote in favour of Dr Satnam Kaur at serial No. 30, the ABVP has claimed.

Mr Kapoor claimed in a written statement that some parents had told ABVP members that that they had even received threatening calls from school authorities saying that their wards would suffer in case they did not cast their votes

The ABVP has alleged that it had been observed that all employees of the school, including teachers, were deputed illegally to campaign for the sponsored candidate by making them pay personal visits to the voters in their assigned localities. They were made to visit voters houses not only once but a number of times, which is a well known fact. Mr Kapoor further alleged that the peons were deputed to pass the written instructions to the parents and they were forced to acknowledge receipt of instructions by signing on another sheet.

He said it was pertinent to note that a vast majority of teachers were not campaigning willingly, but had been forced by the Principal. The teachers feared loosing their jobs in case they did not comply with his orders as Mr Patial is notorious for his autocratic and vindictive attitude. The school vans were openly used to transport voters to the polling stations which is a blatant misuse of public money, the ABVP has alleged.

Mr Patial had earlier been also named in many controversies, particularly for forcefully getting unaccounted money under the garb of donations at the time of admissions from the parents of the students. This practice is still continuing which demands a thorough probe by the government authorities, the ABVP convener, Mr Rajat Sood said.

The ABVP demanded a stringent action against Mr Patial and his immediate removal to end his regime of terror. ABVP also demanded a thorough probe to unearth the atrocities carried out by Mr Patial on students, parents and teachers. ABVP also threatened to intensify their agitation till he was removed and justice was done to all concerned.

Several attempts were made to contact Mr Patial, but the only functional phone of the school had a fax attached to it. There was no response from Mr Patial to a fax sent by this correspondent.

Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 21
Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh, Urologist and Transplant Surgeon of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital has saved the life of a 37-year-old female by performing a 10-hour-long rare kidney surgery. The patient had blockage in both the kidneys. Her left kidney had failed completely due to the blockage because it was not detected early, a hospital spokesperson disclosed.

The patient's right kidney was operated upon twice by other surgeons earlier but they failed to clear the blockage and the problem persisted causing damage to the kidney.

This was a very challenging case where pre-carrying urine from bladder of right side had got damaged and was scarred. Dr Aulakh first put one pipe in the patient's kidney which remained there for more than seven months and when the kidney function stabilised then he took the decision to repair the only functioning kidney of patient.

A 20 cm portion of small intestine was taken and was used as a conduit from kidney to the urinary bladder thus replacing the whole ureter of kidney with that portion of intestine. Normally such a long and damaged ureter is difficult to repair.
