Soya products ‘help lower’ risk of heart diseases

Soya foods and products are highly nutritious and contain several biologically active components which help reduce risk of heart disease. Soyabeans has almost 40 per cent protein making it higher in protein content than any other legumes and animal products.

These were some of the observations of speakers at a workshop on Nutritional health benefits of soya and soya products organised by the American Soyabean Association, the Vippy Soya and Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (India) Ludhiana Chapter here today. Dr Daljeet Singh, Principal, Dayanand Medical College was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr G.S.Padda, Professor-cum-Head, Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU, and President AFST (I) welcomed the participants.

Dr Padda explained health benefits of soya products and the potential of soya processing industry in India. Doctors from DMC, CMC, Oswal Hospital, Sutlej Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Gurdev Hospital, private medical practitioners and scientists from PAU attended the workshop.

Dr Kavitha Reddy, Consultant, American Soy Association, reviewed nutritional benefits of soy products.

Dr Vanita Munjal discussed the health benefits of isoflavones present in soya beans, which decrease risk of heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol, diabetes and various cancers.

Role of soya products to combat osteoporosis and menopausal problems were highlighted.

The speakers pointed out that in addition to rich nutrients, soya bean has other beneficial compounds like phytosterols, lecithins etc which aid in cancer prevention, cholesterol reduction, osteoporosis and menopause regulation. Human studies have shown that that as little as one serving of soya foods may protect against cancer and investigations over 30 years have shown that soya consumption selectively decreases total and LDL (bad) cholesterol and maintains HDL (good) cholesterol.

Protein in just 250 gm of soyabean is equivalent to protein in 3 liters of milk or 1kg of mutton or 24 eggs.Soybean are an excellent source of dietary fibre with both soluble and insoluble fibre.

The former may help reduce serum cholesterol and blood sugar. While the latter may prevent colon cancer and relieve some symptoms of digestive disorders. Soyabean has all the important vitamins and is a very good source of B complex and Vitamin E. recent research has shown that soy foods can relieve menopausal symptoms, reduce cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis.

It is also considered a natural alternative for hormone replacement therapy for women who are in menopause.

Health check-up camp

Ludhiana, September 4
Life Insurance Corporation of India, Ludhiana Division, organised Free Health check up camp for school children at MGM Public School, Urban Estate, Phase-Il Dugri, Ludhiana. More than 500 school children were checked. Parents of the children also participated in the free health check up camp. The free heath check up camp was inaugurated by Mr Sat Pal, Marketing Manager, LIC of India, Ludhiana Division.

Essay competition: Essay competition was organised at Joseph School, Dhandra Road, Dugri, More than 100 students of VI, VII and VIII participated in the competition. Drawing and painting competition was organised at New Era Public School, Urban Estate, Phase-II, Dugri , Ludhiana. 100 students participated.

Donation: LIC will donate five wheel chairs to the physically challenged persons at Rehabilitant Vocational School for Disabled and Blind, Haibowal Ludhiana.

Poster competition on eye donation held

The Department of Ophthalmology, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here organised a poster writing competition here today to spread awareness among the public for eye donation as a part of the ongoing World Eye Donation fortnight. Over 120 students from medical, dental and nursing colleges participated in the competition. Results of the competition would be declared during the concluding day function on September 8.

Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent CMCH said that corneal blindness accounted for 1.52 per cent of total blindness or over 20 lakh in terms of number of Indian citizens each year. At least four lakh corneas were required for transplantation whereas availability was 15,000.

Cricket probables attend camp in city

Ludhiana, September 4
After attending training camp at Mohali last month, the Punjab cricket probables (u-15 and 17 years) arrived here to play two matches of 100-overs each at the local Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground.

At Mohali, 28 players each in the u-15 and u-17 years sections underwent coaching-cum-training programme. The Punjab Cricket Association panel of selectors, with the consent of the respective coaches, pruned the player’s lists. The probables, attending the camp here at Ludhiana include 17 players in the under-15 years category while in the under-17 years section, the number is eighteen.

The camp began today during which besides playing two matches in the next four days, the probables would take part in the conditioning as well as body tone up exercises in the morning and evening sessions. Former Ranji spinner Bharti Vij of Ludhiana is the in-charge of the camp for boys U-17 and Munish Bali from Patiala who has represented Rest of India (junior) team is imparting training to the u-15 probables.

The names of probables are (u-15)- Gurkirat Singh, Himanshu, Sidharth Kumar of Chandigarh; Robin Singh and Mandeep Mandheera of Jalandhar; Gurnoor Singh of Amritsar; Preet Kamal, Peery Goyal and Mohit Mohindra of Patiala; Jatinder Rana and Rohit Jassal of Hoshiarpur; Geetansh Khaira, Gagandeep Dhand and Sushyant Kohli of Ludhiana; Krishan of Kapurthala; Rohit Gupta and Harmanbir of Mohali.

Under-17: Simarjeet Singh, Sunny Sohal, Harmeet Singh and Amanpreet Singh of Mohali; Sidharth Sharma, Gurkirat Singh, Sumit Dhiman, Gaurav Ghambhir of Chandigarh; Vipan, Bharat Loomba, Gaurav Bhandari and Charanjeet Singh of Amritsar; Gajender Singh, Rajwinder Singh and Kunwar Raina of Patiala; Sumit Kalia and Ishan Dogra of Jalandhar; Bharat Malhotra of Ludhiana.

BVM, KVM students share honours

Hosts Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kitchlu Nagar in the girls’ section while Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines in the boys’ section romped home victorious to lift the titles in the Ludhiana Sahodhya Schools Complex Kho-Kho Tournament which concluded today.

In the final (girls), Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School got the better of Satluj Public School to emerge victorious while the third position was won by Guru Nanak Public School, Mullanpur.

In the boys’ section, Kundan Vidya Mandir School defeated Guru Nanak Public School Mullanpur and Shemrock Christian Public School finished third. Mr Mitter Sain, President, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Trust gave away the prizes to the position holders.

Under-15 probables score 123 runs

A match between teams comprising Punjab Cricket Probables u-15 and u-17 years was played at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground here today. The probables are attending the four-day coaching camp here and would play two matches of 100 overs a side.

Batting first, the under-15 probables were restricted to 123 runs in 56.4 overs. The main contributors were Himanshu and Gurkirat of Chandigarh who made 53 and 27 runs respectively. Local lad, Gagandeep Dhand and Gurnoor Singh of Amritsar chipped in with 15 and 11 runs respectively.

For the under-17 prabables team, the successful bowler was Harmeet Singh of Mohali who took three wickets for 19 runs while Sumit Dhiman and Sidharth both of Chandigarh scalped two victims each conceding 26 and 24 runs respectively. Bharat Loomba and Gaurav of Amritsar captured one wicket each. At draw of stumps, the under-17 probables team were 48 for 3 after 12 overs. Simarjeet Singh and Sunny Sohal of Mohali made 11 and 8 runs while Vipan of Amritsar and Gurkirat were two not out batsmen. For the under-15 probables, Mohit Mohindra of Patiala took two wickets for 20 runs while Sidharath of Ludhiana grabbed one for 23.
