A letter by Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh to Capt Amarinder Singh on June 18 about the absence of Congress legislators from the Assembly notwithstanding, the debate on the Budget had to be adjourned for a few hours today as the Treasury Benches were deserted.

Fake currency, degree racket busted, 4 held
Amritsar, June 23
The Majitha police has busted a fake currency and fake degree racket. A total of Rs 10 lakh in counterfeit notes and fake bachelors and masters degrees have been recovered along with a computer, a printer and a scanner.

3,502 terrorist victims’ kin given jobs
Chandigarh, June 23
The families of victims of terrorism are entitled to an ex-gratia grant of Rs 1 lakh and employment on compassionate grounds. Besides, they are eligible for a grant of Rs 25,000 for the marriage of each dependent woman member of the victim family, a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs 2,500 and free education and bus travel for widows.

  Punjab plan to make jails more secure
Chandigarh, June 23
In an attempt to make the jails more secure, the Prisons Department of the Punjab Police is identifying and transferring officials posted at the same jail for over five years. Though the officials in the Punjab Police Headquarters are maintaining strict silence over the issue, the sources claim that the process of transferring jail wardens in the state has been initiated.

A loan defaulter and his family members today assaulted and injured the visiting Tehsildar-cum-Executive Magistrate, Dr K.S. Randhawa, revenue officials and the District Manager of the Khadi Board when they reached their home to collect the loan, here today.

Punjab to conduct PMET on July 25
Ludhiana, June 23
The Punjab Government has issued a notification for conducting the Pre-Medical Entrance Test (PMET) 2004, for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS courses in government and private medical institutions of the state. The PMET will be conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot on July 25.

The CBI has filed a charge sheet against a dozen rolling mill owners of Mandi Gobindgarh who have been accused of selling adulterating furnace oil received from major oil companies in the black market.

Cops ‘fleece’ train passengers

A migrant labourer couple from Orissa and a student from Jammu were today fleeced by four Railway Police personnel, aboard coach S-7 of the Malwa Express. In the incident, which took place in front of this reporter, the four policemen, two of them carrying Sten guns, started taking a round of the coach after boarding the train at Chakki Bank.
