Panel to suggest hike in collector’s rate
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 22
The Chandigarh Administration today formed a three-member committee to suggest a hike in collector’s rate, which is used as a benchmark to levy stamp duty on sale of property in Chandigarh.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Mr Inderjit Singh Sandhu, will head the committee, while the Assistant Estate Officer, Mr N.S. Brar, and the SDM (East), Mr Naresh Narwal, will be its members. The committee will submit its report within 15 days. It will go through the data of sale and purchase records before a hike is suggested.

According to sources, the formation of the committee comes after the Chandigarh Tribune highlighted on June 18 as to how the Chandigarh Administration was losing out on several lakhs of rupees everyday by way of stamp duty as it has failed to have a realistic value of property for charging stamp duty. The value of property is fixed by the Administration for various types and sizes of properties and is called the “collector’s rate”.

The rate of stamp duty is presently pegged at 6 per cent of the sale price of property.

The buyer pays stamp duty at the collector’s rate while usually as the market price is three to four times of the collector’s rate.
