Awareness drive on smoking in public places
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 13
Awaiting finalisation of the nitty-gritty of booking a person for smoking at public places, which came into force since May 1, the Chandigarh police has launched an awareness drive to educate the possible offenders.

The beat staff have been told that bus stands, district courts, railway station, hospitals and restaurants with a seating capacity of more than 30, are to be considered public places for the purpose of enforcing the ban. However, offices of private companies and private enclosures do not fall in this category.

The beat staff are going to these places and dissuading the people from smoking at these places and also telling them that, after sometime, if they smoke at these places, they will be booked.

The ASP and Station House Officer, Sector 17, Mr Sanjay Jain, has held a series of meetings with different target groups to check the violation of the ban.

All ‘paan’ and ‘bidi’ vendors in the city have been told to put up boards announcing that the sale of ‘bidis’ and cigarettes to persons below 18 years of age is illegal. These boards have come up across the city.

Mr Jain has called meetings of the staff of the bus stands drivers, conductors, restaurant-owners and cigarette vendors to inform them about the ban.

The owners of restaurants and hotels, with a seating capacity of more than 30 persons, have been asked to create separate no-smoking zones.

The drivers and conductors of buses of the public transport companies are specifically being told not to smoke in the vehicles they drive.

The awareness campaign is aimed at reducing the number of cases against smokers who are not aware of the ban and are ignorant about what is defined as a public place.

The rules regarding the ban have yet to be formulated by the Chandigarh Administration.
