Kiwis crash to 9-wkt defeat

Leeds, June 7
England won the second Test against New Zealand by nine wickets at Headingley here today to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. They needed just 45 to win after bowling the tourists out for 161 earlier on the final day.

Marcus Trescothick was 30 not out and Mark Butcher five not out.

"Any Test victory is a bit special," said England captain Michael Vaughan. "We've got to keep building but to beat a strong New Zealand side is a special effort."

It was England's second successive Test series triumph following their first series win in the West Indies for 36 years in April.

England won the first Test at Lord's by seven wickets.

New Zealand, after losing four wickets in 19 balls on Sunday, resumed on 102 for five in their second innings.

That left them 15 runs behind England's first innings 526 which featured 132 from Trescothick and a maiden Test century of exactly 100 from wicket-keeper Geraint Jones.

Scott Styris was seven not out and Jacob Oram four not out. Styris took three fours off the first over of the day from Stephen Harmison before Oram's three off Matthew Hoggard ensured England would have to bat again.

But with New Zealand on 118, just one run ahead, they lost their sixth wicket when Styris (19) was brilliantly caught one-handed by Jones, diving in front of first slip, off local hero Hoggard.

Laws of game being violated openly, says Bedi
Vibhor Mohan
Tribune News Service

Dharamsala, June 7
Urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take stern action against players with objectionable bowling action, former Indian spinner Bishen Singh Bedi here today said that players like Sri Lanka’s star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan were setting a wrong precedent for upcoming players. He also alleged that more than a dozen other bowlers from the sub-continent, including those from Indian and Pakistan, had a bowling action which did not conform to the rules of the game.

Bedi, while reacting to news reports that Muralitharan was preparing to take legal action against him, said in that case he will have to take action against scores of other critics who have declared his action incorrect. ``Why I’m not talking about other players like Shane Warne and only about Muralitharan. I have nothing personal against him but being a bowler myself I don’t subscribe to his style,’’ said Bedi, who is in Dharamsala to give training to budding cricketers at the city stadium.

And Muralitharan’s action, he added, was setting a wrong precedent for the coming generation of bowlers. “I have come across youngsters who try to copy his action, little aware of the fact that it is not as per the laws of the game. The umpires should also be more vocal on such issues,” said Bedi.

“This is not cricket. I believe that most of the wickets taken by Muralitharan are run outs. This is exactly what an umpire told me after a series against England where Muralitharan had taken a total of 16 wickets. He is doing it openly but no one wants to kick off a controversy by pointing a finger at him,” said Bedi.

What to talk of taking immediate action, players with suspect bowling action are given as many as three warning over a period of three years, which is enough time to do damage to the game. “Many more bowlers in Sri Lanka would eventually develop such action in case we do not wake up to the reality,” he said.

For me, he further said, this is even bigger scandal than match-fixing cases and most of the players with objectionable action are from the sub-continent. “There are some in the Indian squad also. The laws of the game are being violated openly and nobody is taking note of it. I think the ICC should exercise its powers and the umpires should also express themselves about the action,” said Bedi.

Today, a former captain of Sri Lankan team has been quoted saying that the Sri Lankan team had messed up the whole thing by asking Muralitharan to go to Australia to get his action rectified, said Bedi.

Kapil’s tips await pace bowlers

Bangalore, June 7
Yoga sessions and Kapil Dev’s tips would be the highlights as India’s leading pace bowlers gather here tomorrow to get back into top shape at a five-day camp ahead of a hectic international season.

As many as 16 bowlers — regulars and potential youngsters alike would assemble for the camp, where fitness would be the mantra that they will chant for the next few days. Exception will be Zaheer Khan, who is slated to join the combined fitness camp that commences here on June 13.

BCCI secretary SK Nair told PTI over phone that Kapil Dev would be at the camp from June 11 to 16 in his role as pace bowlers’ consultant.

The bowlers, who would go through their paces under the charge of physical trainer Gregory Allen King, include Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, L Balaji, Amit Bhandari, Munaf Patel, Avishkar Salvi, Sreesanth, SS Pal, S Mathur, Siddarth Trivedi, N C Aiyappa, Gagandeep Singh, Joginder Sharma, T Kumaran and Mohammed Faisal.

King expressed happiness with the progress made by the pacemen in terms of physical fitness since the last camp in August last year but hastened to add that it did not mean there was no room for improvement.

Sources said the pace bowlers would start the day with an hour-long yoga session at a five-star hotel where they would be put up followed by two fitness sessions at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium here.

The pace bowlers’ camp would be followed by the combined fitness camp, which would be attended by the top flight cricketers, from June 13 to 19.

King said both the camps would focus on fitness but the July 3 to 11 camp would deal with cricketing skills as well.

Kapil would interact with bowlers in the second camp as well, Nair said.

Those attending the second camp are: Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif, Parthiv Patel, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik, Ramesh Powar, Akash Chopra, Hemang Badani, Sairaj Bahutule, Zaheer Khan, Nehra, Agarkar, Pathan, L Balaji, Patel, Bhandari, Rohan Gavaskar and Gautam Gambhir.

Windies on top against Bangladesh

Kingston (Jamaica), June 7
Ramnaresh Sarwan slammed an unbeaten 261 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul added a 101 not out as the West Indies took command against Bangladesh on the third day of the second and final Test at Sabina Park.

The pair’s stroke-filled partnership of 262 set up a mammoth West Indian total of 559 for four declared, a lead of 275 runs on first innings yesterday.

Bangladesh stumbled to 66 for three at the close, staring at their 27th defeat in 30 Tests with two days remaining. Left-armer Pedro Collins led the slide with two wickets, while Tino Best added the other.

Sarwan, who completed his fifth Test century overnight, transformed his 106 not out to the eighth highest score by a West Indian. The right-hander, two weeks away from his 24th birthday, blasted 32 boundaries to all parts of the outfield in a knock spanning nine and half hours. He faced 401 balls in compiling his highest ever first-class score.

Chanderpaul, slow to get going, eventually matched his partner stroke for stroke to energise a crowd of nearly 7,000. The 29-year-old left-hander cracked 11 boundaries off 190 balls in 4 1/2 hours.

Captain Brian Lara’s declaration came soon after Chanderpaul passed his 10th Test century in his 76th match. Lara has threatened to relinquish his captaincy if the West Indies failed to beat Bangladesh in this Test after a draw last week.

Shoaib back to old ways

Islamabad, June 7
Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar is almost certain to run into rough weather with the authorities yet again as he chose to go full throttle for his county team Durham, ignoring medical advice and suggestions of his cricket board alike.

Shoaib baffled one and all when he opted to bowl for the English county yesterday, contrary to his own statements earlier that he would only bat in the National League Division two limited overs match against Scotland to avoid stress and exertion.

“I will not be bowling at all in the one-day games... I will play as a batsman. They (Durham) wanted me to rest but I was very keen to play so they said okay ‘you don’t bowl but you play as a batsman’. I look at this new role as a real challenge in these two games,” he had said.

Media reports here said Shoaib did come in to bat at No 3 for Durham in yesterday’s match against Scotland, but managed only 15 runs in a total of 203 for nine in 45 overs. He stayed at the wicket for 33 minutes, faced 25 balls and hit one four.

He opened the bowling as well, with a first spell of five overs, one wicket and seven runs. His final figures read 9-2-30-2. — PTI

McEnroe’s advice spurred Gaudio

Paris, June 7
French Open miracle man Gaston Gaudio believes last-minute advice from American legend John McEnroe helped him conquer his demons and achieve an unlikely Grand Slam triumph at Roland Garros.

The unheralded 25-year-old Argentinian, who had never got beyond the fourth round of any Grand Slam before and had won just two titles in a steady and unspectacular career, came back from two sets down to defeat Argentinian compatriot Guillermo Coria 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6 here yesterday.

He had been such a nervous wreck, winning just one of the opening 12 games of the final, that he even thought of calling it a day until he remembered what McEnroe told him just before he went on court.

“It’s like touching heaven. I was really suffering before the match and I asked John for some advice,” said Gaudio, the first Argentinian man to win here since his hero Guillermo Vilas in 1977.

“He told me to relax and enjoy being in the final because in a few years time you will ask youself why you didn’t enjoy being in a Grand Slam final when you had the chance,” said Gaudio. “During the match I thought about that.”

Gaudio, the fourth lowest ranked player ever to win a Grand Slam and only the seventh man to win after recovering from a two-set deficit, also believes that his decision to employ a psychologist has proved to be an inspired decision.

“I was playing so bad and I wasn’t doing anything on clay but then this year I reached the final in Barcelona and from that moment I started to get into my tennis again,” said Gaudio.

“He has helped me in the way that I have to enjoy things more, like trying not to suffer on the court and trying to be happy, trying to fight all the time,” Gaudio said. — AFP

Brazil held, Uruguay lose again

Rio De Janeiro, June 7
Chile and Brazil scored controversial goals in a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw while Colombia hammered Uruguay 5-0 to condemn their opponents to their third successive defeat in the competition.

Argentina missed a chance to go top of the South American group when they were held to a home draw by Paraguay while Peru and Venezuela also shared a goal-less stalemate in Lima yesterday.

The weekend’s results left the race for Germany 2006 wide open with only three points separating second-placed Argentina and seventh-placed Peru.

The top four nations qualify directly for the World Cup finals while the fifth plays off against the winners of the Oceania region for another place. Brazil stayed top after their draw on a cold night in Santiago.

The world champions, who won and converted three penalties when they beat Argentina 3-1 on last Wednesday, enjoyed another slice of fortune when Luis Fabiano gave them a 16th-minute lead with television replays suggesting he was off side.

But their luck ran out with one minute to go when Rodrigo Perez tumbled in the penalty area. Although replays suggested no contact was made, Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo pointed to the spot and Reinaldo Navia converted.

“Everyone saw it wasn’t a penalty. Even the Chilean players said it wasn’t a penalty,” Brazil defender Roberto Carlos told reporters.

The point kept Brazil top with 13 points from seven games, followed by Argentina (12), Chile and Paraguay (11), Ecuador and Venezuela (10), Peru (9), Colombia and Uruguay (7) and Bolivia (6).

Colombia, who lost four of their first six matches, and Uruguay, beaten at home by Venezuela and Peru in their last two games, met in Barranquilla and it was the Uruguayans who came off worse. Victor Pacheco and Tressor Moreno scored two quick goals as Uruguay went two down in 20 minutes for the second game in a row.

Pacheco added another first-half strike before John Jairo Restrepo skipped through the defence for a brilliant fourth in the 81st minute. Sergio Herrera tapped in another five minutes later, the 11th goal conceded by Uruguay in three outings. — Reuters

Zidane will be a headache: Eriksson

Manchester, June 7
Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says his England team face an impossible task in keeping France playmaker Zinedine Zidane under wraps in Sunday’s Euro 2004 opener.
Ruling out man-to-man marking, Eriksson said England can only hope the three-times World Player of the Year does not inflict too much damage when they face the European champions.

Quizzed as to whether a diamond midfield or a ‘flat’ 4-4-2 line-up was more suited to keeping the Real Madrid midfielder quiet, Eriksson told reporters: “To be honest, whatever you play, Zidane will be a headache. He’s a headache for everyone.

“He was voted the number one player of the last 50 years and he will create problems for sure over the 90 minutes. Let’s hope the problems are not too big.”

Eriksson dismissed any idea of using a defensive midfielder to shadow Zidane in what will be a crunch Group B match for both sides before the easier games on paper against Switzerland and Croatia.

“If we mark him man-to-man we will lose a lot of our play and I’m not prepared to do that against anyone,” Eriksson said. “I’ve never done it in my life. Why should I do that now?”

The key to England’s hopes of coping with Zidane, along with strikers Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet, he said, lies in the degree of communication between midfielders and defenders.

“When you meet France, you have to talk because you never know if Zidane is going to be on the left side or central, and then on the other side there’s (Robert) Pires.

“If you give Pires space, he will beat people, put in crosses or take a shot himself. And up front you have two players who are not bad,” he added with a grin.

England captain David Beckham knows Zidane’s range of skills better than anyone else in Eriksson’s squad after playing alongside him for the past season in Real’s midfield.

“Zidane is one of the best players, if not the best player in the world,” Beckham said.

“To play with him is a pleasure. But to play against him is going to be a tough game. It’s something we have to overcome.”

Ominously for England in the run-up to Sunday’s game in Lisbon, Zidane said last week he feels at the very top of his form.

The playmaker, whose two goals against Brazil in the final guided France to World Cup glory in 1998, told reporters: “I feel at the peak of my career. I’m going to be 32 years old and this European championship is coming at just the right time.” — Reuters
