Taekwon-do workshop for kids

Chandigarh, June 7
In the martial art summer workshop organised at KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, National coach of the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI),Vishnu Kumar Sharma taught the techniques of self defence like locks, choke, throws and kicks to the participants. More than 50 children are taking part in camp. Sharma has received international certification from the USA. He is 5th Den black belt.

In cricket camp children learnt techniques of batting, bowling and fielding. In the karate workshop, children learnt the self defence, like chumbey, one punch and taekwon-do, Handan Muckey, Algul Muckey, Algul Charaegy, Pakkak Muckey, Palmaak Muckey, Sonn kach charagey and Sudo Muckey.

Rana club beat Khushman XI

Superb performances by Gundeep Rana, who claimed 2 wickets for 29 runs and remained unbeaten with 41 runs and another fine knock of 59 runs in 31 deliveries by Jagjeet Saini enabled Rana Foundation cricket club in beating Khushman XI by eight wickets in the Thai shopping league cum knockout cricket tournament played on the premises of Government Model Senior Secondary school here today. In another tie, coaching centre, sector 19 beat the Friends cricket club by 13 runs, the Panthers cricket club defeated Thai Shopping centre by 67 runs and Unik Xi defeated Chandigarh Youth XI by nine wickets.

20 students take part in camp

Chandigarh, June 7
The first batch of 20 students today took a pledge to transform their lifes by adopting the technique explained by Brahm Kumari Poonam at a programme organised by the youth and education wing of Brahma Kumari Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalya.

Students between the age group of 15 years to 24 years participated in the camp organised at House No. 3228, Sector 47-D. Speaking about the success of the programme, she said these students had developed the faculty of remembering the tables up to 30 by heart.

Bahl is manager of Indian skating team

Chandigarh, June 7
Ms Madhu Bahl, Principal, KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, has been appointed manager of the Indian skating team which will take part in the 10th Asian Roller Skating Championship to be organised in Akita, Japan, from June 12 to 15.

In 2003, Ms Bahl had accompanied Indian women roller hockey team for the World Ladies Roller Hockey meet held in Portugal and also the 9th Asian Skating meet held in Taiwan in October, 2002.

Three officers shortlisted for appointment as FS

Chandigarh, June 7
The Punjab Government today sent a panel of three names to the Chandigarh Administration for appointment as Finance Secretary. Almost the entire top brass of the Administration is expected to change in the next eight to 10 months.

The three names on the panel for the post of are, Mr Jagpal Singh Sandhu 1983 batch officer, Dr G. Vajralingam, a 1986 batch officer and Mr S.K. Sandhu, a 1987 batch officer, sources confirmed. One of them will replace the Finance Secretary, Mr Karan A. Singh, a 1984 batch officer, whose tenure ends in the first week of July.

A list of about 25 IAS officials had been sent to the Punjab Chief Secretary, Mr Jai Singh Gill, who cleared these three names. A formal letter was sent to the Chandigarh Administration this afternoon, the sources added. This also ended speculations that the Principal Secretary to the, Punjab Chief Minsiter, Mr Suresh Kumar, was to be the next Finance Secretary of Chandigarh.

The Financ Secretary in Chandigarh is also the Secretary, Health, Information Technology and Engineering and the Chief Administrator for matters of property. This makes it a very powerful post and will automatically lead to hectic lobbying. Mr Jagpal Sandhu has served as Deputy Commissioner in Patiala and Sangrur besides Commissioner of Faridkot and then Ferozepore. Dr Vajralingam has served in Chandigarh twice, once as Joint Secretary, Finance, and then as Finance Secretary in Punjab he has served as Secretary, Expenditure. Mr S.K. Sandhu is presently posted as Registrar, Cooperative Societies. He has serve as Director, Industries and Commerce.

The UT Administrator will finalise his preference and then forward the names to Government of India. Since Chandigarh is a Union Territory, it is directly governed by the Union Home Ministry and the selection will be made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and the file will go for clearance to the Prime Minister.

Also, sources in the Chandigarh Administration today said the UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma (retd), has refused any extension in tenure of the Joint Secretary Home, Mr Ashok Sangwan, and to the Director, Public Relations Mr Ashok Arora. Both officials are from the Haryana Civil Services cadre and have completed five years.

A panel of names to seek their replacement from Haryana will be sought. A replacement will also be sought for Mr Naresh Narwal, Secretary, STA. He is also an HCS officer.

The Administrator has given clearance for extension to the Director, IT, Mr Vivek Atray, however, Haryana is yet to accept it. Mr Atray is also an HCS official.
