Tribune News Service

Panchkula, June 5
A team of the Haryana Health Department yesterday raided six kulfi manufacturing units — two each at the Industrial Area (Phase-I), Sector 15 and Abheypur village — and destroyed sub-standard material being used to prepare kulfi.

The health department team was led by Dr Lalit Vermani, District Health Officer, Panchkula. The raid was conducted to ensure the kulfi vendors were taking hygiene into account, while preparing kulfi.

The water and utensils being used by them to prepare kulfi were also checked. They were warned not to manufacture kulfi with substandard material.

District health officials said that such raids would continue in future to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases.

He said 56 samples of water were taken for bacteriological test in the district last month. Out of 33 results of the samples received, three were found below standard.

Officials say that Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the district administration have been urged to ensure proper chlorination of water.

They warned that more samples of water and milk products would be taken to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis, jaundice and other water-borne diseases during summer.

CHB’s development effort remains on paper
Tribune News Service

  • CHB has forgotten to relay four critical roads in the city.
  • On May 6, the CHB opened tenders to allot the work of Rs 5 crore.
  • Resulted in reprimand from the Election Commission as the code of conduct was then in force.
  • Roads are in a bad shape, with four feet wide potholes and no streetlights.
  • The promise to repair these roads was made nine months ago by Justice O.P. Verma.

Chandigarh, June 5
More than one month after the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) opened tenders to carry out development works in southern sectors, residents are still waiting for the benefits to show. The effort remain on paper and no work has begun. With the monsoon round the corner, it seems it will take longer that the time perceived for the work to start.

These four sector separating roads remain full of potholes and without streetlights. These roads are critical for movement of people in the southern sectors and towards Mohali.

The issue of relaying and repairing of these four roads was first taken up in September last. The UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma, then took a famous bus ride.

After inspecting the condition of roads and the storm water drainage system, the Administrator okayed a plan to upgrade infrastructure in Sectors 39 to 47. Justice Verma announced that roads separating Sectors 39 and 40, Sectors 40 and 41, Sectors 41 & 42 and Sectors 46 & 47 would be re-carpeted.

In March, The Tribune highlighted that no work had been done despite the announcement. Justice Verma was reportedly livid and the CHB prepared a plan for development even as the model code of conduct was in force during the Lok Sabha elections. On May 6, the CHB opened tenders worth Rs 5 crore which it invited for development works in the southern sectors on April 8.
