Major among 8 killed in valley Srinagar, May 26 Four Army personnel, including Major A.K. Tripathi, were killed in an encounter with militants at Neelipora, Magam, near Handwara, in Kupwara district last night. A civilian was also killed and two were injured in the exchange of fire between the security forces and hiding militants. The encounter ensued when security forces were fired upon by the militants hiding in a house at Neelipora. The security forces had cordoned off the area on a tip-off about the presence of militants there. Police sources said reinforcements had been rushed to the spot to flush out the militants hiding in the village Two Pakistani militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Hajin, about 35 km north of here, in Baramula district late last evening. The encounter ensued when militants fired upon security personnel deployed at the residential house of Mr Khursheed Ahmad Parray, son of the late Kukka Parray, a militant who had turned a politician. Kukka Parray was shot dead along with three of his associates when militants attacked his vehicle near the house last year. Parray, a former MLA from the Sonawari Assembly constituency, had joined the mainstream in 1994. He headed a counter-insurgent group, Ikhawn-ul-Muslimoon. The slain militants were identified as Mohammad Sahrab from Multan and Mohammad Waseem, alias Abu Hamza, from Punjab, Pakistan. Two AK rifles, seven magazines, 374 rounds, one UBGL gun, three UBGL grenades, two hand grenades and a damaged wireless set were recovered from the site of the encounter, the police said. Four militants surrendered before the authorities in Kupwara and handed over four AK rifle, 18 magazines, two UBGLs, 19 UBGL grenades, four hand grenades and a large quantity of ammunition to the authorities, the police said. The police recovered the body of Mohammad Rajab Lone, a resident of Hurapora, Shopian from a nearby village in Pulwama district today. Two AK magazines and 51 rounds were recovered by the security forces at Badami Bagh, Sopore, in Baramula district yesterday. The police busted a hideout and recovered three grenades, 67 AK rounds, one bayonet, one binoculars and a knife from Pangali in the Reasi area of Udhampur district in the Jammu region. In a separate incident, Army troops launched a search operation to flush out militants who targeted their patrol party and later took shelter briefly inside a school building in Baramula district of north Kashmir today. The sources said militants opened fire on a patrol party of Rashtriya Rifles at Asham village in Sonawari area. The troops fired back and chased the fleeing militants, who forced their entry into Noor-ul-Islam High School in the village. However, as the troops were surrounding the school, the militants again opened fire and fled, the sources said, adding that the area was cordoned off and a hunt launched to nab the militants. About 500 students were present inside the school at the time of the incident, the sources said, adding that students left the school building safely. However, a stray bullet hit a policeman, Abdul Majeed Ganai, who was on leave and resting in his house. The Border Security Force today busted a communication centre of militants in Badgam district of Central Kashmir, a senior BSF official said. The communication centre, equipped with a high-power set, was unearthed following specific intelligence information at Ledan-Buzgu, Deputy Inspector-General of the BSF, Mr K. Srinivasan, said. Troops of 76 Battalion of the force carried out the operation and recovered the high-frequency set with a battery, a transformer, two handsets and a binoculars from the centre, he said. |
Take pride in uniform, General asks NCC cadets Srinagar, May 26 A defence spokesman said General Bopana in his address to the cadets at the JAK LI Centre auditorium exhorted them to take pride in their uniform. He said the NCC as an organisation could be a role model for many a country. It provided cadets with the opportunity to understand society and develop their personality. Earlier, General Bopana inspected the camp lines and a guard of honour. The national integration camp of the NCC is a major event where cadets from different regions interact. |

to increase bus fleet Srinagar, May 26 This was decided at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the corporation held under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma here yesterday. He said measures initiated recently had increased the number of operational buses to 80 per cent of the fleet, which was being raised to 90. The Deputy Chief Minister said the SRTC had earned a record revenue during the past five months, which was expected to touch Rs 5.50 crore this month. He said the services on all inter-state routes had been restored. Now routes, including one to Dehra Dun, would be started shortly. He said more buses should be plied by private operators on high-density hill routes to check overloading. He told the authorities that the number of seats should not be allowed to be increased by mini-bus and other passenger transport operators beyond the prescribed limits as this caused inconvenience to the commuters. The Minister of State for Transport, speaking at the meeting, said in view of tourism picking up in the state, the corporation would provide the best possible transport facilities to the tourists. The Managing Director, SRTC, Mr A.K. Mehta, said an MoU had been signed with the Indian Oil Corporation to create wayside facilities for the SRTC. |

Measures to restore glory of Dal Lake Srinagar, May 26 The treatment plants are being set up at Hazratbal, Habak and Laam using the latest technology, Minister for Housing and Urban Development Ghulam Hassan Mir told a meeting of the board of directors of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority here today. Meanwhile, the board accepted a project report on checking the spread of red algae and toxic material in the lake. Reviewing the rehabilitation of lake dwellers, the board approved a plan for raising housing colonies at Chandpora and Harwan with the provision for a school, hostel, religious places and entertainment parks. It was also decided to rejuvenate Chunt Khul, a tributary of the lake. Besides the implementation of an action plan to preserve lakes and other water bodies, streamlining the existing pattern of development works were also discussed at the meeting.

7 sapphire smugglers held Jammu, May 26 The world’s best sapphires are available in the hills of Paddar in Kishtwar tehsil of Doda district and their extraction was stopped about a decade ago due to the spread of militancy there. Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Udhampur-Doda) Satvir Gupta said the arrested persons had been smuggling sapphires from Paddar to other parts of the country for the past some time. He identified them as Sonam Narboo of Paddar, Shiv Ram of Legri, Paddar, Kuldeep Raj of Jammu, Vidya Sagar of Udhampur, Raman Dogra of Sarwal, Jammu, Sonam Tashi of Kishtwar and Rashid Khan of Jaipur, Rajasthan. Apart from 16 sapphires, Rs 5,13,500 fake Indian currency notes were also recovered from them at the time of their arrest, the DIG informed.
