Women and matters of the heart

WORKING women are under dual stress due to responsibilities at home and workplace and must, therefore, not dismiss warning signals of heart disease.

Dr Upendra Kaul, Director, Interventional Cardiology and

Electrophysiology, Batra Hospital, says that the number of young working women under medication for heart diseases is on the rise. Dual stress is triggered off by the pressures and demands of the workplace and equally perplexing problems and tensions of the family and home.

According to Dr Kaul, the inequal distribution of work in Indian households leaves the woman tired and anxious. This affects the blood pressure, which in turn affects the heart.

Smoking, alcohol intake, faulty food habits and lack of physical exercise also increases the risk of heart diseases. Other symptoms that should be taken seriously are chronic breathlessness, waking up in the middle of the night to catch breath, chronic fatigue, dizziness, swelling of ankles and fluttering heartbeats. Dr Kaul says that women often ignore pain and discomfort in the chest and mistake it as normal heartburn or acidity. It is important to recognise symptoms of Coronay Heart Disease well in time. He suggests yoga, meditation and music as effective ways to tackle stress.

Liquid stitches introduced

Johnson & Johnson has introduced Dermabond, liquid stitches, which close wounds without the use of sutures. The stitches can be used to close incisions and laceration, which would, otherwise, need sutures, staples or skin strips. Approved by the US food and Drug Administration, Dermabond is available in India on medical prescription.

The liquid stitches are appropriate for abdominal surgeries, back surgeries and surgeries of the face, neck, arms and legs. Besides, they are used for closure of facial incisions on the eyelid or nose.

In some cases, it also eliminates the need for an antibiotic injection for wound closure. Dermabond liquid stitches can be applied only by a doctor.

The stitches react with moisture on the skin’s surface and form a strong, flexible bond in two and a half minutes. As the wound heals, the stitches peel off in five to ten days.

This saves patients the trouble of revisiting the doctor for removal of stitches

WorldStar 2003 Award for Dr Reddy’s Labs

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories was recently honoured with the prestigious WorldStar 2003 award by the World Packaging Organisation for the anti-counterfeit packaging design for Omez (Omeprazole) capsules.

The award function was held in Basel in Switzerland.

The jury, comprising representatives of the World Packaging Organisation, the International Packaging Press Organisation and the International Association of Packaging Research Institutes, met in Cairo, Egypt, in October last year.

Wordstars are presented only to those packages which have been recognised in a national competition and are compared by an expert panel of judges to similar packages from other parts of the world. The awards were instituted by the World Packaging Organisation in 1970.

Mr Satish Reddy, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories described the honour as a “significant achievement” in their effort to ensure the availability of safe and high quality medicines.

“Counterfeit medicines put the lives of millions of patients at risk. Innovative packaging will save the health and life of patients.”

The Omez capsules pack is inimitable and has several overt and covert anti-counterfeit features. The primary pack features are an embossed brand name, ink jet coding of batch details and circular printing on capsule shells.

The secondary pack features are unique and invisible matrix with a photograph on the side panel and brand name OMEZ on the front panel of the carton. This cannot be scanned or photocopied.

Baxter Healthcare Corp.

Baxter Healthcare Corporation announced the launch of a blood donor friendly ALYX Component Collection System at a seminar on Transfusion Developments and Blood Safety.

The ALYX System produces two units of Leuco-reduced red cells from a single donor without extracting double the amount of blood. It collects whole blood, separates the red cells from the whole blood and returns all other blood components to the donor.

Ms Dianna Fox, Global Brand Manager, Baxter Heath Care, explained that since ALYX extracts only red cells and returns all other components to the donor, it enables blood centres increase red cells supplies without enlarging the donor pool. This will also be a boon to thalassemia patients. Many blood centres have reported shortage of red blood cells (RBCs). The demand of RBC has exceeded supply due to increase in the number of surgeries, growing population of older patients and fewer donors.”

In his presentation, Mr Sanjiv Verma, Managing Director, Baxter India said, “ The ALYX system is the next step in the evolution of automation. It is fast, portable, easy to use, donor friendly and delivers the optimum supply of critically needed, high quality blood components.”
