State-of-the-art system for cancer patients opens

Ludhiana, May 22
A latest state-of-the-art treatment planning system for cancer patients was today inaugurated by Lala Vidya Sagar Oswal, president of the managing committee of Mohan Dai Oswal Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation here. The two units of micro-selection brachytherapy system for high dose radiation treatment of cancers were dedicated to the foundation for the treatment of cancer patients.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Satish Jain, Medical Director of the hospital, said the radiation unit in the institution was equipped with highly sophisticated and advanced machines for treating cancer patients.

Dr Arvind Verma and Dr Rajesh Vashisht of the radiation unit observed that a major and important change in the treatment modalities was the availability of electron beams after the revival of non-functional linear accelerator.

Gurpreet Khaira to lead u-19 cricket team

Ludhiana, May 22
Gurpreet Khaira, a student of BA I of the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys, will lead the Ludhiana (u-19) team in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for the Dhruve Pandove Trophy to be organised by the Punjab Cricket Association from May 23 at different venues. Ludhiana, in its inaugural match (May 23 and 24), will take on Amritsar at Amritsar.

According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association, at the end of the five-day coaching camp, the following 15 players were picked up to represent the district in the forthcoming tournament. The players are: Gurpeet Khaira, Dushyant Kohli, Ashish Vinayak, Ashish Sehgal, Rattan Bricher, Chinton Sehgal, Tarun Passi, Pankaj Kumar, Yogesh Kumar, Deepak Gatta, Gaurav Kumar, Sanjiv Sahota, Sanjay Kumar, Gaurav Khurana and Paramvir Singh. Besides, five boys were selected as standbys. They are: Amritpal Singh, Rajan Wassan, Micky, Vikas Pathania and Pankaj Khera.

Sports Club, Riat XI joint winners

Ludhiana, May 22
The final match between the Sports Club and Riat XI of the first Instant Cricket Trophy Tournament, organised by the College of Agriculture Cricket Club, PAU, here at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds today ended in a tie and the two finalists were declared joint winners.

Batting first, Sports Club made 117 runs for the loss of five wickets in the stipulated 10 overs. Their innings revolved around Nishu and Ajitpal, who contributed 35 and 34 runs, respectively. Thanks to Jassi (32) and Rakesh Sethi (44 n o), Riat XI scored 117 runs for 5 in their quota of 10 overs.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, the Sports Club beat PAU XI by 41 runs, while Riat XI prevailed over Micky XI by six runs to enter the final.

Brief scores: Sports Club- 117 runs for 5 ( Nishu 35 off 24 balls, Ajit Pal 34 off 13 balls; Harbhajan Kala 30 off 11 balls; Kamal Billa 1 for 3 and Sunil 1 for 14)

Riat XI- 117 for 5 ( Jassi 32 off 20 balls, Rakesh Sethi 44 n.o off 16 balls; Davinder 1 for 9, Kala 1 for 6 and Dharminder 1 for 6)

Ajit Pal Singh of the Sports Club was declared the player of the tournament and the best batsman while Davinder, also of the Sports Club, was named the best bowler.

Dr A.P.S. Mann, Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities-cum- Director, Students Welfare, PAU, presided over the prize distribution function and gave away prizes. Mr R D Singh, cricket coach of the PAU who had retired last month, was felicitated by the COA Cricket Club on the occasion.

Basketball trials

The Punjab Basketball Association (PBA) conducted trials here at the Guru Nanak Sports Complex on Friday to select girl players for the camp in preparation for the 21st Youth National Meet to be held from June 20 to 26 at Gotan, Rajasthan. Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal informed that the selection panel of Arjuna awardee Sajjan Singh Cheema, Dr Subramanian, K K Jaggi, Harjinder Singh and B M Bali shortlisted the following 27 probables for the camp to be organised here from May 24 to June 18.

The names of the probables are: Ankita Sharma, Rajpreet, Ranjeet, Jagroop and Harpreet Kaur of Amritsar; Sarabjit Kaur, Priya, Saruchi Bala, Ramandeep and Balkaran of Jalandhar; Sumandeep, Kushpreet Kaur, Aarthi and Harneet Kaur of Muktsar; Amandeep and Navdep Kaur of Faridkot; Simran of Ludhiana; Anuradha, Karambeer, Surahi Pathania and Sakshi Sharma of Gurdaspur; Kiranpreet, Harjeet, Harminder and Sarabjeet Kaur of Baba Lodhiana Academy; Harwiner Kaur of Hoshiarpur and Aarshe Dhindsa of Sangrur.

Veera Devi cricket

The final match between the Rana Club and the Sports Club in the Veera Devi and the first Madan Lal Gupta Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the FTI Club will be held here at Sarpanch Bachan Singh Cricket Academy ground at Haibowal Kalan on May 23. In the semi-finals, played on May 9, the Rana Club outplayed Riat XI by 77 runs, while the Sports Club had overpowered Bedi Club by eight runs to set up the title clash.

According to Mr Baisakhi Ram, organising secretary of the tournament committee, the 25-overs final match will start at 8.30 am. Mr Surinder Dawar, an MLA, will be the chief guest at the prize distibution function.
