Many senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers are waiting for the election process to end so that they can get their promotions and subsequent postings.

At least three officers posted in the Chandigarh Commissionerate are due for promotion as Commissioner. Sources say all formalities, including a Departmental Promotion Committee meeting, had been completed. Before the promotions could be notified came the announcement on February 29 for holding elections to the 14th Lok Sabha. Officers due for elevation are Mr S.J. Singh, Mr Gurbans Singh and Mr Charanjit Singh.

Besides getting promotions, some officers in the commissionerate are due to move out of Range for having completed eight years here as per the recommendations of Kelkar Committee implemented by the Ministry of Finance some time ago.

Mr G.S. Narang, Mr Manmohan Singh and Mr P.S. Pruthi are among the senior officers who may be due for moving out of the Range. Even the Chief Commissioner of Chandigarh, Mr S.S. Bedi, may be elevated in coming weeks. He is tipped to be nominated on the board.

Besides Excise, similar promotions in the Customs wing and Income Tax Department, held up because of the Lok Sabha elections, are expected in the second half of this month. As such Chandigarh may have to bid farewell to a number of IRS officers.
