Delhi plays host
to World Dance
Day today New Delhi, April 28 UNESCO declared April 29 as World Dance Day in 1982 on the recommendation of the Counseil International da la Danse (UNESCO’s official umbrella organisation for all forms of dance) dedicated to the universal family of dancers and with the objective of attracting wider public to the art of dance. This is the first time that the Sangeet Natak Akademi is celebrating the occasion, offering dancers of India an opportunity not only to link up with their fellow artistes all over the world but also to reach out to people and involve them in sharing the joy, significance and philosophy of dance. The akademi is adding the message of peace on this occasion, presenting the programme as `Dance for Peace’. Pt Birju Maharaj, eminent guru of kathak and Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi will inaugurate World Dance Day and Mr Dhanendra Kumar, Secretary, Department of Culture, Government of India, will grace the occasion as the chief guest. Joining hands to celebrate the occasion with the akademi’s initiative and support are eminent dancers, dance teachers and institutions of Delhi who will present short performances by groups of their young disciples. FCI toy with DDA in five-a-side soccer New Delhi, April 28 The winners led by 6-1 at half time. Bhupinder Rawat (6), Trilok Bisht (4), Gurmeet (2), Sanjeev Bhalla and Mehtab Ali (2) were the winners’ marksmen. Rajan and Aslam reduced the margin for DDA. In the schools section, Raisina Bengali School, Chitranjan Park, defeated Modern School, Barakhamba Road 5-4 to record their second straight victory to top their group. Prasanto Middya struck four goals in a row for Raisina Bengali. Sandeep Sarkar added the other goal. Anubhav Jha scored two goals for Modern School. Akash and Mohit accounted for the other goals. St. Francis D’Sales School, Janakpuri, defeated Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj 5-1. M Fahad scored three goals, while Anup Paswan and Udit Chibber added one goal each.
