Energising youths to look after senior citizens

Speaking at the 253rd meeting of Top Management Club of Institute of Marketing and Management (IMM) here, the Delhi Police Commissioner, Dr K. K. Paul, asked the people to extend their active cooperation in maintaining law and order in the national Capital.

Elaborating on the various initiatives taken by the police force to maintain law and order in the national Capital, including regular meetings with the Resident Welfare Associations, trade organizations, association of corporate bodies and other stakeholders, he said the Delhi Police was making special effort to train teenagers to look after the senior citizens in their respective localities.

Calling upon said the citizens to act like a policeman without uniform, he asked them to feel free in sending their complaints directly to him either by e-mail or through the post. (Post box number 171).

Dr Paul said that it is the primary responsibility of the citizen to root out corruption from the society. “If anyone feels that there are certain officers in Police Department who indulge in corrupt practices, the people can send their complaint to him directly,” said Dr Paul.

Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Management Studies (MAIMS) organised a seminar on the “Indian financial sector-Challenges and opportunities” at the India International Centre.

The seminar focused on the emerging scenario in the Indian financial sector, particularly related to the banking and the insurance sector and the challenges faced by the financial sector. The seminar also discussed the marketing strategies to be adopted to successfully meet the challenges.

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, Vice- Chancellor of Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University. He said that the institute has been able to give high-class education to the students.

New courses in Mass Communication

IAAN School of Mass Communication, managed by the Prabhu Dayal Kasere Ji Charitable Trust, has introduced new courses in Master of Arts in Mass Communication, Master of Arts in Advertising and Public Relation, Bachelor of Journalism and Diploma in Video Production.

Application has been invited for these courses for the new academic session. It is claimed that the Makhan Lal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism has agreed to provide affiliation to the institute to conduct these courses.

The Managing Director of the Institute, Mr Anuj Garg, said that the institute was set up in 1999 with the sole aim of imparting training to aspiring media professionals so as to avail of the various opportunities in media and other related fields.

“We are committed to imparting quality training in this field. The faculty comprises top professionals from the media world, who have effectively handled the curriculum,” Mr Garg said.

It has a well-established audio visual production house and a mass media training and research centre.

In addition to documentaries, corporate films and educational CD’s, it has also been conducting interactive workshops on mass communication.

SAF Madanjit Singh Scholarships launched

At a function hosted by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in the honour of UN Goodwill Ambassador Madanjit Singh, the South Asia Foundation (SAF) Madanjit Singh Scholarships were launched at the India International Centre.

SAF has allocated 6,000 scholarships, each worth US $ 300 per annum.

Of these 3000 scholarships are for IGNOU students and shall be awarded with effect from July.

Another 3000 scholarships shall be processed through SAF Madanjit Singh Scholarship cell located in Distance Education Council (DEC) in state open universities and institutes of distance education in dual mode universities.

The Delhi Lt-Governor, Mr Vijai Kapoor, presided over the function. The Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, Prof. H. P. Dikshit, delivered the inaugural address, which was attended by Vice-Chancellors of Open Universities of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, representatives from Nepal, Maldives, Afghanistan and the IGNOU fraternity.

Better deal for nurses

Nurses will now have a unique opportunity to access quality jobs in USA through the joint venture between MEPCO International and Jaipur Golden Hospital.

The demand for nurses has gone up in the USA and other western countries due to the huge shortage of nursing staff. As per the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, more than one million new nurses will be needed by 2010.

According to Ravi Mittal, Director, MEPCO International, “Indian nurses are in great demand in the USA for their education, experience and caring nature. MEPCO provides a better life abroad for nurses. For years, the nursing profession has been plagued by low salaries and poor working conditions.”

Believe in Yourself programme

The Capital Institute of Competition Training (CICT) has introduced a unique scholarship programme for the students, the ‘Capital Institute Believe in Yourself’ (CIBIY) programme.

According to Mayank Mittal, Director, CICT, “At CICT, we teach students to believe in themselves. It is not just a slogan or a punch line…we will teach the students the most effective and innovative way to clear any possible hurdle.”

NIIT has introduced GNIIT programme in software Architecture to provide cutting-edge career start to the students. Targeted at learners seeking a career, GNIIT programme equips the students with “Architecture skills” for a rewarding career in software solutions design & development in IT and IT-user organisations.

Giving details of the new programme, Dr Smarajit Dey, head, NIIT’s ‘Individual Learning Business’, said, “We are committed to prepare students to be proficient in emerging technologies so as to significantly contribute to the global software industry.”

Delhi plays host to World Dance Day today

New Delhi, April 28
Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy of performing arts of music, dance and drama, is celebrating World Dance Day on April 29 along with leading dance institutions of Delhi. The celebration will be held on the lawns of the Akademi premises at Rabindra Bhavan, Copernicus Marg, from 5 pm to 10 pm and will include performances and demonstrations of folk, classical, martial and contemporary dances as also screening of video films on dance from Akademi archives, besides other attractions.

UNESCO declared April 29 as World Dance Day in 1982 on the recommendation of the Counseil International da la Danse (UNESCO’s official umbrella organisation for all forms of dance) dedicated to the universal family of dancers and with the objective of attracting wider public to the art of dance.

This is the first time that the Sangeet Natak Akademi is celebrating the occasion, offering dancers of India an opportunity not only to link up with their fellow artistes all over the world but also to reach out to people and involve them in sharing the joy, significance and philosophy of dance. The akademi is adding the message of peace on this occasion, presenting the programme as `Dance for Peace’.

Pt Birju Maharaj, eminent guru of kathak and Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi will inaugurate World Dance Day and Mr Dhanendra Kumar, Secretary, Department of Culture, Government of India, will grace the occasion as the chief guest.

Joining hands to celebrate the occasion with the akademi’s initiative and support are eminent dancers, dance teachers and institutions of Delhi who will present short performances by groups of their young disciples. They include the Kathak Kendra, Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra. Mrs Sonal Mansingh, Mrs Saroja Vaidyanathan, Mrs Kanaka Srinivasan, Mrs Swapnasundari, Mr Jayarama Rao and Mrs Vanasree Rao, Mrs Leela Omchery, Mrs Jamuna Krishnan, Mrs Deepti Omchery Bhalla, Kum. Saswati Sen, Mrs Jayalakshmi Eshwar, Mr Shashadhar Acharya, Mrs Geeta Chandran and Mr Santosh Nair among others.

An unbeaten knock of 84 by Nishant Sharma and a deadly spell of 3 for 25 by Sagar Sudan helped Frank Anthony Academy beat R P Academy by 11 runs in a league match of the Master Cup Under-10 Cricket Tournament at the Frank Anthony ground.

Nishant Sharma received the man of the match award. The tournament was inaugurated by Frank Anthony School principal Stephen D’Costa.

FCI toy with DDA in five-a-side soccer

Food Corporation of India (FCI, North Zone) toyed with Delhi Development Authority (DDA) 14-2 in the institutional category of the Five-a-Side Ambuja Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium.

The winners led by 6-1 at half time. Bhupinder Rawat (6), Trilok Bisht (4), Gurmeet (2), Sanjeev Bhalla and Mehtab Ali (2) were the winners’ marksmen. Rajan and Aslam reduced the margin for DDA.

In the schools section, Raisina Bengali School, Chitranjan Park, defeated Modern School, Barakhamba Road 5-4 to record their second straight victory to top their group.

Prasanto Middya struck four goals in a row for Raisina Bengali. Sandeep Sarkar added the other goal. Anubhav Jha scored two goals for Modern School. Akash and Mohit accounted for the other goals.

St. Francis D’Sales School, Janakpuri, defeated Delhi Public School, Vasant Kunj 5-1. M Fahad scored three goals, while Anup Paswan and Udit Chibber added one goal each.

Aseem reduced the margin for DPS.
