Cell separator machine inauguration on April 30
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, April 26
A cell separator machine — recently installed in the Department of Immunohaematology and Blood Transfusion in Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital — will be inaugurated on April 30. A seminar in this regard is also being organised by the department on the same day.

The machine would enable the removal of only the desired blood components like platelets, red cells or plasma from the donor, unlike the usual procedure where whole blood was removed from the donor.

This, would improve the safety and efficacy of blood transfusion. At the same time, it would minimise the unwanted effects seen with blood transfusion. The state-of-the-art equipment, based on modern technology and presently available at very few transfusion centres in the country, would be inaugurated by the Director-Principal of the college, Professor H.M. Swami.

For updating the technology of blood components, a seminar was being organised with the objective of highlighting the significance of using a single donor’s blood for a number of patients requiring specific components according to their individual requirements.

About a 100 delegates from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh would be participating in the seminar. Transfusion experts from Delhi, Mumbai and the region would also deliberate on aspects of the technology and its potential benefits for patients.
