Workshop on cattle fertility

Ludhiana, April 22
A week-long training workshop on ‘Cattle fertility management for optimum economic returns’ was inaugurated in the Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, College of Veterinary Sciences, Punjab Agricultural University, here yesterday.

As many as 18 scientists from Bangladesh, China, Mongolia, Myanmar, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Sri Lanka are being provided training in diagnosis of various reproductive problems of dairy cattle and buffaloes.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Dr K. Raghuraman, coordinator, Regional Cooperation Agreement Programme, United Nations, highlighted the role of India in strengthening regional cooperation among South East Asian countries, especially in the field of agriculture and livestock.

Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, appreciated the United Nations for choosing the university for such prestigious and challenging task of training international scientists and assured it of providing necessary help. He stressed on need-based and targeted research in livestock problems of tropical countries as the knowledge pertaining to reproductive problems in the developed world cannot be directly applied on animals elsewhere.

Dr A.S. Nanda, Director of workshop, said the scientists in the department had been working on the causes of infertility and on developing appropriate treatment of infertility at field level for over the past several years. The technical officer of the Food and Agricultural Organisation, Vienna, Dr O. Perara, expressed confidence that the benefits attained from the training would be distributed among the farmers of several under-developed countries.

Ludhiana, April 22
‘Expressions’, a three-day cultural bonanza, began
at the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town, here today. Nearly 10 cultural and literary events, including rangoli, mehndi, collage-making, poster-making, sketching, painting, cartooning, flower arrangement, mime, short skit, poetry and story-writing.

Col H.S. Singha, Acting Director, said the contests for quiz, debate, case discussion, case presentation, extempore, just a minute, mock press conference, dumb charades and mono-acting would be held on Friday. On Saturday, there would be competitions for Indian vocal solo, Western vocal solo, Western vocal group, Indian solo dance, Indian group dance, Western solo dance, Western group dance, choreography, sell it and fashion show, he added.

Shabad singing contest

Ludhiana, April 22
Primary section students of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, participated in a shabad singing competition held here today. Among the participants of Class III, Anurag Dhaliwal stood first and Jasleen Kaur was declared second. Divnoor and Jaskirat Singh shared third position. Among the participants of Class IV, Bhavdeep Kaur, Bhavneet Kaur and Arshpreet Kaur were declared first, second and third, respectively. Suchetna Singh, Steffi Kala and Tanbir Oberoi were declared first, second and third, respectively, among Class V students. OC
