Father, cousin acquitted of woman’s murder

Noida, April 5
A Noida court has acquitted the father and cousin (son of father’s brother) of the murder of a pregnant young woman for want of the prosecution’s failure in presenting clinching evidence. The assailants had left the severely wounded woman for dead after hitting her with a sharp-edged weapon near Kesrala village.

The injured victim had, however, given birth to a girl child in a Delhi hospital but after some time both mother and daughter had breathed their last.

On October 26, 2000, a passerby had informed the Dadri police that the body of a young woman was found lying near Kesrala village. The police had rushed the still breathing victim to AIIMS, New Delhi. She had lost a lot of blood as she had been hit on the neck with a sharp-edged weapon. She had given birth to a girl child but a little later the young woman and the newborn had expired.

She was identified as the daughter of Ramesh Chand of Bale village in the Bagpat area. The victim, in her statement to the police, had accused her father and a cousin, Sukhpal, of having tried to murder her. The police had presented a case under Section 302, 315 and 201 of the IPC against the two accused in the court on the basis of the young woman’s statement.

In the court of the officiating District and Sessions Judge, Mr V. K. Yadav, the defence counsel said the girl who was staying in her maternal uncle’s house in Modipur had eloped with someone. But the prosecution could not present a foolproof case so the father and cousin of the victim were acquitted by the court.
