16 teams for Ajit Singh Hockey tourney

New Delhi, April 4
Sixteen prominent Khalsa Schools from Delhi and Punjab will participate in the second All-India Sahibzada Ajit Singh Gold Cup Hockey Tournament to be played simultaneously at the Shivaji Stadium and the National Stadium from April 6 to 13. The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis.

Defending champions Shri Guru Hari Singh Maha Vidyalaya, Sirsa and Doaba Khalsa Model Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar are among the teams in the fray.

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president Prehlad Singh Chandhok said the winners will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 60,000 while the runners-up will be given

Rs 40,000. The third-place team will be richer by Rs 30,000. Mr Prehlad Singh said cash award of Rs 5,000 each will be awarded to four promising players in goal-keeping, defence, half line and forward line.

Lt. Governor Vijay Kapoor will inaugurate the tournament on April 4 at 10 a m at the Shivaji Stadium.

Mr Prehlad Singh said a selection committee, comprising former Olympians S Harbindar Singh, G Nandy Singh and Brig Chimny will select the four promising players. During the tournament, two exhibition matches will be played between Delhi Veterans and Lahore Veterans.

Najafgarh Club race past Lal Bahadur Shastri

An all-round display by Manoj Kataria (40, 1x6, 6x4, 46b, 2x24) and a spitfire 45 by Abhishek enabled Najafgarh Sports Club defeat Lal Bahadur Shastri Club by four wickets in the 14th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce ground, Pitampura.

Manoj Kataria was presented the Pepsi man of the match award by chief guest Anil Sood.

Scores: Lal Bahadur Shastri Club: 166 for 8 in 40 overs (Dalip T.T 64, Rohit Sharma 33 no, Mahender Bisht 2 for 20, Manoj Kataria 2 for 24, Imran Shokeen 2 for 27, Ravinder Panwar 2 for 34).

Najafgarh Sports Club: 167 for 6 in 38.2 overs (Abhishek 45, Manoj Kataria 40, Dalip TT 2 for 23, Prem Prateek 2 for 42).

Sonnet beat Madan Lal Academy

An all-round display by Kunal Gaba (3 for 34 and 44) and a half century by Mukul Sharma enabled Sonnet Club defeat Madan Lal Academy by six wickets in a league match of the

West Delhi Under-12 Cricket Tournament at the Hari Nagar Sports Complex ground.

Scores: Madan Lal Academy: 171 for 6 in 30 overs (Samarth Khanna 38, Sahaj Kumar 38, Manik Gupta 30, Kunal Gaba 3 for 39). Sonnet Club: 172 for 4 in 27.4 overs (Kunal Gaba 44,

Nakul Sharma 50 n o).

Jatin Khanna deadly

Deadly bowling by left-arm spinner Jatin Khanna (5 for 30) and a half century by Sumit Sharma helped Sonnet Club crush Shalimar Club by six wickets and entered the quarter-final of the fifth ARBDM Cricket Tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

Jatin was declared the man of the match. The tournament was inaugurated by J K Gaur, director of JKG Senior Secondary School and T Paresh, general manager of Uttam Toyota.

Scores: Shalimar Club: 205 for 8 in 40 overs (Hemant Singh 39, Paras Dogra 35, Rahul Nigam 30, Jatin Khanna 5 for 30). Sonnet Club: 206 for 4 in 36.1 overs (Sumit Sharma 61, Parvinder Singh 48 n o, Rahul Deewan 42, Devender Sharma 28 n o, Sandeep Angurala 3 for 28).

Alpine Club win

Alpine Club beat Madan Lal Academy by 80 runs in the DAV Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Yamuna Complex ground.

Scores: Alpine Club: 210 all out in 39.2 overs (Manish Adhikari 42, Imran Khan 43, Jatin Kumar 28, Geet Arora 3 for 22, Ashwin Venkatraman 3 for 25).

Madan Lal: 130 all out in 32.3 overs (Arush Khanna 37, Geet Arora 30, Prakash Kumar 3 for 46, Vijay Anand 3 for 12, Manish Adhikari 3 for 27).

Delhi XI beat Queensland varsities

New Delhi, April 4
A Delhi Invitation XI defeated the visiting Queensland Universities team by five wickets in a limited-over match played at the Teri Oval.

Batting first, the visitors made 197 all out in 39.5 overs while Delhi Invitation XI notched up 200 for the loss of five wickets. Shikhar Dhawan was the hero of the Delhi victory as he scalped five wickets and struck a brilliant century.

Himanshu Khullar also contributed his might with a blazing unbeaten 61.

Director of Teri Dr R K Pachauri inaugurated the match while Australian High Commissioner to India Penelope Wensley gave the prizes.

Scores: Queensland Universities: 197 all out in 39.5 overs (Heath Peprola 21, Paul Coachrane 42, Shikhar Dhawan 5 for 31).

Delhi XI: 200 for 5 (Shikhar Dhawan 107, Himanshu Khullar 67 n o).

Top eves for ITF tourney

New Delhi, April 4
Top women players of the country like Rushmi Chakravarthi, Sai Jayalakshmi, Ankit Bhambri and Sonal Phadke are the prominent entries for the $10,000 Bank of Baroda ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament to be held at the R K Khanna Stadium from April 5 to 9.

All India Tennis Association (AITA) secretary Anil Khanna said the tournament will provide an ideal platform for the young players to display their talent.

Besides the leading players of the country, a number of fancied players from abroad, like Chuang Chia-Jung of Taipei, Montinee Tangphong of Thailand and Khoo Chin-Bee of Malaysia will participate.

Mr Anil Khanna said players from several other countries like Britain, Korea, China, Canada, France, Hong Kong and South Africa are also participating in the tournament.

Lt. Col Amarbir Singh will be the tournament director while Sheetal Iyer has been named the tournament director.

Mr Khanna said the AITA has received a grant from the Grand Slam Development Fund, administered by the International Tennis Federation, for the conduct of this tournament.
