Security agencies oppose ceasefire move Jammu, April 1 A senior BSF officer posted in Srinagar said, “The level of violence has not touched zero. Militants attack security pickets, convoys, political activists and pro-government elements everyday. He said, “Our forces have achieved success in eliminating rebel commanders and in smashing more than 100 hideouts of militants in various parts of the state during the past three months. A ceasefire at this juncture can prove counter productive as was the case in 2000 when the Centre announced halting of combat operations.” A senior police officer said “Ceasefire at this time can help militants in regrouping and carving out new bases in areas that have been sanitised by the security forces.” He said, “If the ceasefire is aimed at keeping leaders of the APHC (Abbas) in good humour, it is a different matter them.” Maulvi Abbas Ansari, APHC chairman, said, “During the second round of talks with Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani in Delhi recently, we again raised the demand for a ceasefire by the security forces and Mr Advani had assured us that he would place the demand before the Cabinet Committee on Security.” He said ceasefire and release of political detinues could create a suitable atmosphere for further progress in bilateral talks and Indo-Pak parleys. |
EC gears up for flawless poll Srinagar, April 1 Talking to mediapersons on his arrival from New Delhi here today, Mr Krishnamurthy said the commission would hold free, fair and transparent Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir. He added that election to six Lok Sabha seats in the state would be an improvement over the previous one. The Election Commission, comprising the Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners B.B. Tandon and N. Gopalaswami and Deputy Election Commissioner Noor Mohammad, arrived on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Mr Krishnamurthy said the visit was to take stock of the arrangements for ensuring free and fair elections and discuss related issues with the authorities and political parties. Asked about the controversy of surrogate advertisements, the Chief Election Commissioner said issues like this and exit and opinion polls would be taken up at an all-party meeting being convened by the commission. He said efforts were on to ensure a dignified election campaign and a broad consensus was being evolved among political parties on such issues. He asked political parties to conduct themselves in a responsible manner and if they indulged in mudslinging and personal attacks, they would bring disgrace to democracy. Replying to a question on the BSNL’s announcement of reduction of tariff, Mr Krishnamurthy held that the commission would examine whether the decision was of commercial interest or motivated by the government. The members of the commission were received by the Chief Secretary S.S. Bloeria, Director-General of Police Gopal Sharma, Chief Electoral Officer, B.L. Nimesh, Divisional Commissioner Khursheed Ganai and Inspector-General of Police K. Rajendra. |
