They win medals living in Sonepat but are forced to go to Delhi for practice
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, March 31
It is a pity that boxers from Sonepat district win medals in the state and national level competitions but are forced to go to Delhi for receiving training as there is hardly any coaching or training facility for them in the district.

In the recently concluded national level boxing championship at Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh, five boxers, Ankit in 48 kg, Ashok Kumar in 51 kg Sanjay Kumar in 54, kg, Rajesh Kumar in 57 kg and Vikas Yogi in 60 kg weight category, from this district participated. Three of them, Ankit, Sanjay and Vikas Yogi, got the first position and the other two, Ashok Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, were runners-up in their categories.

According to these boxers, there is no facility for the boxers in Sonepat. No equipment is provided. No coach has been appointed here to train the boxers. The boxers have to make contributions from their pocket to buy the equipment. And if the equipment gets damaged they are again compelled to contribute from their own pocket to buy new one. “Many a times we are not able to buy new equipment for want of money,” they remarked.

The boxers informed that they go to Delhi in the evening and return to Sonepat after at least two hours of training. “A lot of time is wasted in the train journey and if the facilities are provided in Sonepat we can devote the time spent in journeying to and fro in practising here,” they told NCR Tribune, adding that in the morning they go to the CRA College grounds for practice.

They also pointed out that the state government has formed a new sports policy and a number of incentives, including cash awards, were being given to the sportspersons.

“But probably there is no proper planning to create or provide training facilities to the youngsters. We are sure that if proper training and facilities are provided for every game or sport the results will be far better,” they opined.

Many a times it becomes very difficult for the parents to spare a lot of money for training and practice at distant places. If these were made available here it would be a great help for the youngsters as well as their families, they said.
