Rolls of honour on college students

Ludhiana, March 26
Rolls of honour were bestowed on Baljeet (bhangra), Gurdip Singh (power-lifting), Fatehjit Singh and Amrit Pal Singh (basketball) at the annual prize distribution function held here today at Gujaranwala Guru Nanak College in its golden jubilee year.

Dr S.S. Johl, Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission, gave a large number of awards to meritorious students of the college who had excelled themselves in academic, cultural, sports and other co-curricular activities.

After welcoming the chief guest, Principal Gurdip Singh read out the annual report to acquaint the gathering of the achievements of the staff and the students. Dr Johal said that fundamentals of achievement and success may sometimes come after failures, but failures are stepping stones to success. Dr Johal wished good luck to the students and advised diversity in approach and wider participation in life which helps in building up a complete human being. The three important issues of corruption, indiscipline and nepotism were points to ponder for the coming generation.

Prof Harpal Singh Batra was the master of ceremonies and Dr G. S. Ahluwalia conducted the stage. Other dignitaries present were Mr Harmohinder Singh, secretary, Khalsa Educational Council, Dr Gajinder Singh, senior vice-president, and many others.

The MA students of first year economics of KLSD arranged a farewell party for their seniors here today. The juniors presented a grand cultural show and also conferred titles on the seniors. The final year students presented a modelling show in return. Punjabi touch was given by presentation of a gidha. ‘Prof. Mohd. Saleem wished the outgoing students success in the coming examination. Afterwards the students took up the stage and danced to their heart’s content to the peppy music.

Akhand Path in memory of martyr

Ludhiana, March 26
The Punjab Agricultural University Students’ Union organised an akhand path in the memory of Lt Thakur Triveni Singh, a former student on Friday. Lieutenant Triveni had attained martyrdom while fighting terrorists at Jammu Railway Station in December, 2003. The martyr was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously. On the occasion, the students proposed that the portrait of student be installed in the university’s hall of fame. They also said the swimming pool of the campus be also named after him. The family members of the martyr were present on the occasion.

The university officials including Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, directors, deans and professors were present on the occasion.

Murder accused acquitted

Mr Baldev Singh, Sessions Judge, Ludhiana, has acquitted Jatinder Kumar, alias Lucky, of Ghatti Mohalla and Amit Kumar of Gulchaman Gali, in the murder case of Balwinder Singh, finding the statement of alleged eye-witness to be full of inconsistencies.

The body of Balwinder Singh was found in the Gulchaman Gali on Septemeber 11, 1999. Initially the police had conducted the proceedings under Section 174 of the Cr.PC relying upon the statement of Tarlok Singh, uncle of the deceased, and two other persons.

But on September 16,1999, accused were booked under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC at Division No. 3 police station following the statement of Makhan Singh. The complainant had stated before the police that on the intervening night of September 10, he had gone to M/s Ambala Goods Booking Agency to enquire about the receipt of the consignment.

At that time he had seen four persons quarrelling with each other. Jatinder Kumar gave stabbed Balwinder Singh with the help of a co-accused. When these persons were quarrelling, he left the spot and next morning went to Delhi. On his return he came to know that Balwinder Singh had died due to injuries, added the complainant.

During examination on April 9, 2001, the complainant identified the accused but when cross-examined on April 10, 2003, he refused to identify the accused. Apart from this he changed his earlier recorded version and the court not relied upon his statement. Another witness, Kanwaljit Singh was examined but he was also declared hostile. Finding no credible evidence against the accused, the judge passed the order of acquittal.
