Love affair ends in tragedy
Harassed by relatives, youth commits suicide
Ludhiana, March 19
A young farmer of Gurditpura village, near Payal, committed suicide last night after struggling for several months with his relatives for the acceptance of his inter-caste marriage with a girl from Doraha.

Teachers told to return question papers
Ludhiana, March 19
Following the announcement regarding the postponement of the examinations of Class X and plus two by the Punjab School Education Board, the District Education Department today directed centre superintendents to return the packets of question papers.

Ludhianvis queue up for Pak visa
Ludhiana March 19
Hundreds of Ludhianvis today had a tough time to procure visa for Pakistan in order to see the fourth one-day cricket match between India and Pakistan on March 21. Cricket fans who returned from Amritsar after getting the visa said more than half of the applicants belonged to Ludhiana. Some of them returned disappointed as only a limited number of visas were issued by the Pakistan High Commission.

Cop transferred for abetting suicide 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 19
Sub-inspector Rashpal Singh, former SHO of the Dehlon police station who had been booked with two others for allegedly forcing Harsewak Singh to commit suicide, has been transferred to Ropar police district. The other accused have been sent in judicial remand.

Hero Cycle workers hold protest

Workers of the Hero Group of Companies today staged a demonstration against the alleged high-handedness of the management. They were seeking the withdrawal of chargesheet against some of the employees and revocation of suspension orders.

PAU raises BEd seats to 40
Ludhiana, March 19
Punjab Agricultural University has increased the number of BEd seats from 25 to 40 in the coming session. A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the academic council, chaired by Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, here today. The members said since the students had been demanding an increase in the admission seats and as sufficient infrastructural facilities were available in the university to accommodate more students, 15 new seats could be added up this time.

Hike in school fund charges resented

Resentment prevails among parents of students of GMT Public Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar bypass, over the increase in some fund charges by the authorities. Protesting outside the office of the school directors, the parents said annual sports and computer funds charged by the school had been raised unduly.

A graduation ceremony was held in Swami Dayanand Hall here today for tiny tots of Kindergarten of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School. Mrs Paramjit Kaur, Principal of the school, was the chief guest. The function started with a lamp-lighting ceremony by parents. The children were given certificates and flowers were showered upon them.

Pankaj adjudged man of match
Ludhiana, March 19
An all-round performance by Pankaj Bansal who scored 39 runs and took four wickets steered the team of undergraduate students of 2000 batch to a 24-run victory over the team of 1999 batch in the final of the cricket tournament held during the annual sports festival of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys ground here yesterday.
