Saidali bags Open Chess crown

New Delhi, March 18
Grand Master Saidali Iuldashev of Uzbekistan defeated Grand Master Dibyendu Barua to bag the second Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament title at the Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra.

In the final round, Saidali Iuldashev defeated former Commonwealth champion Barua, Pavel Kotsur defeated International Master C S Gokhale while Surya Shekhar Ganguly defeated Serik Temirbaev, resulting in a three-way tie with nine points each.

Saidali’s win was decided through the spin of coin to halt the winning streak of Pavel Kotsur.

More players achieved the IM norm with Tejas Bakre making the grade despite drawing with former under-12 world champion Deep Sengupta. Sandipan Chanda defeated R R Laxman while Delhi chess champion Sriram Jha defeated woman Grand Master Koneru Humpy. Defending champion R B Ramesh drew with T. S. Ravi to finish 14th.

The prizes were distributed by International Chess Federation (FIDE) vice-president P T Ummer Koya, Mr Pardeep Jain of Parsvnath and Delhi Chess Association secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan.

Y Sandeep was adjudged the under-12 champion with seven points while former under-12 world champion Deep Sengupta was declared the under-16 champion. Koneru Humpy won the best woman champion title while national under-11 champion Parimarjan Negi was adjudged as the best Delhi junior champion.

Ravinder to lead Delhi soccer team

New Delhi, March 18
Striker Ravinder Mohan Bisht will lead a 20-member Delhi soccer team in the Under-21 North Zone National Football Championship for the M Dutta Roy Trophy to be held at Ambala (Haryana) from March 19 to 28. Medio Anil Rawat has been named the vice-captain.

The team: Goal-keepers: Manoj Kumar Mishra, Kokesh Dhar Kukreti and Kapil Kumar. Defenders: Anil Bara, Sandeep Malik, Sunil Negi-I, Sunil Negi-II, Uttam Singh Negi, Shahzad Ali and Aruendra Negi.

Mid-fielders: Anil Rawat, Jatin Singh Bedi, Mohd Fardeen Quereshi, Raj Kumar Pal and Yash Pal Rawat. Forwards: Ravinder Mohan Bisht, Sunil Rawat, Parveen Lawrence, Ashish Bhidiyal and Manoj Bisht.

Stand-byes: Kamal Deep Singh, Anupam Rathore, Pramod Mishra, Sukant Joshi, Mohd. Aslam and Wasim.

Officials: Nagendra Singh and Magan Singh Patwal (managers). Julius Ceaser (coach).

Delhi take on Haryana in their opening Group A match on Friday and meet Jammu and Kashmir on March 21 and Himachal Pradesh on March 23.

Group B is composed of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Chandigarh. The semi-finals and final will be played on March 26 and 28 respectively.

Darling Club crush Chand Khanna in DDCA League

Fine batting by Sandeep Rana (61) and Farman Ahmad (53) helped Darling Club crush Chand Khanna by five wickets in a Super A Division match of the DDCA League at the Mohan Meakin ground. Gautam Ghambir’s fine century for Chand Khanna went in vain.

Scores: Chand Khanna: 270 for 8 in 40 overs (Gautam Gambhir 106, Amar Singh 67, Durga Prasad 55 n o, Tony Singh 3 for 28). Darling Club: 271 for 5 in 38.3 overs (Sandeep Rana 61 n o, Farman Ahmad 53, Utkarsh Gautam 50, Rohan Kumar 38, Durga Prasad 2 for 36).

Dena Bank beat Mohan Meakins by nine wickets in a Super A Division match at the University ground.

Scores: Mohan Meakins: 124 all out in 28.4 overs (Rajender Madan 38, Kunal Lal 3, Aditya Jain 4 for 16, Suresh Batra 3 for 17). Dena Bank: 125 for 1 in 15 overs (Manu Nayyar 56 n o, Pradeep Gupta 38 n o).

Food Corporation of India (FCI) defeated R R Gymkhana by eight wickets in a Super A Division match at Mohan Nagar.

Scores: R R Gymkhana: 185 all out in 38.4 overs (Pradeep Chawla 69, Narender Singh 39, Ved Prakash 4 for 26). FCI: 188 for 2 in 32 overs (Dharmender Fagna 77 n o, Sonu Vaid 44 n o).

Indian Airlines defeated Delhi Administration by seven wickets in a Super A Division match at the Delhi University-II ground.

An all-round display by Dhanraj Singh (108, 10x6, 6x4, 46b and 3 for 11) and a deadly bowling of 5 for 43 by leg-spinner Sandeep Joshi enabled Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Trust XI defeat British High Commission by 109 runs and entered the semi-final of the third Commonwealth High Commission Cricket Tournament for the Raymond Trophy.
