This doctor loves to paint Ludhiana, March 15 Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Saroj said, “I have had a great fondness for painting since childhood. I used to paint original works then, but once I joined a medical college, I found that it was difficult for me to create my own compositions. So the next best thing was to copy the works of well-known artists. I love painting portraits. That is why most of my paintings show faces — some bright, some sad, some old and some young.” Despite being a busy doctor, the moment she is free, she goes to her easel and wields the paint brush. “It has taken me a long time to collect 40 paintings to exhibit. It was my hobby but over the years, my passion for painting has increased. It proves to be cathartic in the stressful modern- day life,” she says. Prof N.P. Dhanda, the 84-year-old teacher of art, has been her mentor and guiding spirit. She has worked under him for 18 years. “I have always been inspired by him. His boundless energy and insight into the nuances of oil painting has helped me to mature as an artist,” she states. Mr Dhanda was vocal in praise of his student. “Saroj is extremely hard working and very meticulous in the execution of paintings. For this reason, her paintings end up having a three-dimensional effect,” he says. The figures in her paintings have a life-like quality. The noteworthy paintings are the “The Old Magician”, “On a Visit”, “Caravan”, “Who can harm us”, “Shiva’s son”, “Rajasthani Charm” and “Rhythm”. |
