Admn proposal to set up chicken slaughtering plant
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 15
Worried over the sale of unhygienically slaughtered chicken in the city, the Administration has asked the Union Animal Husbandry Ministry to hand over a portion of its poultry farm in Chandigarh for setting up of a state-of-the-art chicken slaughtering plant.

The Central Poultry Farm, spread in an area of 24 acres, is located in the Industrial Area, Phase I, on the Chandigarh-Ambala road. It has a slaughtering plant which is lying inoperative. The Administration is keen on installing a plant there.

Sources in the corporation say everything will depend on how the Government of India reacts to the proposal.

The idea behind the proposal is to have a centralised bird slaughtering facility. At present, no such system exists in Chandigarh despite a huge demand of chicken and chicken products.

There are a large number of chicken shops in the city. Birds are generally kept in a small cage in these shops which are slaughtered by the seller on the spot. A large number of unauthorised butcheries exist in various slum colonies that dot the city. The products sold at these shops are mostly unhygienic.

At present, the buyer has to go by his personal judgement while deciding from where to purchase poultry products. Now, the Administration, under its plan, aims to have a proper check on all birds which are slaughtered and standardise the sale of chicken.

Traffic police strength to be raised, says SSP
Our Correspondent

Mohali, March 15
The strength of the traffic police in the town would be increased soon as more staff was allotted for this purpose.

This was stated by Mr Surinder Pal Singh, SSP, Ropar, while talking to mediapersons here today. He had come as chief guest at a function organised to mark the conclusion of the Traffic Education Week, which had started on March 8. He said more staff had been allotted from the Commandos Battalion to look after traffic in Mohali. Motor cycles for the force were also being provided so that patrolling in the streets of the town could be made possible.

He said during the past month there were 350 challans, out of which 150 were related to overspeeding.

Earlier, while addressing the gathering the SSP said that awareness about traffic rules had been provided to the public during the week and now people should abide by the rules. After March 22 traffic enforcement week would begin and offenders would be brought to book. Challans would be done at the level of the Inspector.

He said the number of persons murdered in Punjab in a year was about 748 but about 3,000 persons lost their lives in road accidents. He said the maximum imprisonment in accident cases was six months and only a few of the accused went through this punishment.

Mr Pritam Singh Johal, DTO, Ropar, said driving licences should be issued only after proper verification.

He appealed to the police authorities to do something about noise pollution. Students were having their examinations these days but loud music was played at social functions, adversely affecting their studies.
