Star-studded field for Indian Open Golf New Delhi, March 11 The Royal Challenge Indian Open, the longest-running international sports event in India, carries a prize money of Rs 50,000 for the winner. The field this year has participation from over 160 international professionals from 19 countries and the top 30 in India. Chief operating officer of Jumbo Group H N Nanani said at a media briefing at The Grand hotel in New Delhi on Thursday that the “Indian Open has carved a niche for itself in the golfing calendar of the world with some of the top players gracing the prestigious event”. Mr Niranjan Thakur, executive director of Shaw Wallace, clarified that there was no move to pull out of the Indian Open by his company and the association will continue, but in a slightly altered format. He said a movement was on at making golf, which is often regarded as an elitist sport, more appealing to the masses and more exciting to the audiences. He said Shaw Wallace was spearheading this movement by investing generously for the promotion of sport. President of Corporate Affairs Kapil Channa said his company’s commitment to golf was total. “We have now expanded our involvement in golf into corporate sphere with our sponsorship of tournament such as the CII Golf Championship. We are also now spearheading with golf-related events such as the Royal Challenge Corporate Putting Championship in order to expand and popularise the game of golf.” President of the Indian Golf Union Capt. K N Harsh said all revenues generated from sponsorship of the Indian Open is utilised towards promotion of golf in India, coaching programmes and assisting various golf clubs in carrying out course rating etc. |
