Northern Railways beat NE Railways by seven goals

Ludhiana, March 10
The Northern Railways, defending champions, overwhelmed the North-Eastern Railways, 7-0, to begin their title hunt on a rousing note on the third day of the eighth All-India Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal Memorial Women’s Hockey Tournament being played at the Deso Turf ground of Punjab Agricultural University here today.

The players of North-Eastern Railways, Gorakhpur, were no match to their superior opponents and the current champions, Northern Railways, who had as many as seven international-level players in their team. The Northern Railways girls went into an early lead (12th minute) through Surinder Kaur and 10 minutes later, Gurpreet Kaur enhanced the lead to 2-0. Surinder Kaur scored her second goal in the 29th minute to further consolidate the lead 3-0. Two minutes before the lemon break, Surinder again struck to make it 4-0.

After changing the ends, Northern Railways girls continued to dictate terms, pumping in three more goals (40th minute, Pritam Kaur; 41st minute, Gagandeep Kaur; and 53rd minute, Suman Bala) and won the match 7-0.

The North-Eastern Railways team earned three penalty corners, two in the first half and one in the second session, but failed to convert these into goals. This was their third successive defeat and they made an exit from the competition.

In the second match, the Central Railways, Mumbai, outclassed SAI, Chandigarh, 3-1. After the first barren half, Annu Baxar of CR, Mumbai, put her team ahead in the 49th minute through a field goal.

The very next minute, SAI players restored parity through Raj Rani. In the 53rd minute, Annu Baxar, again netted the ball to read it 2-1 in favour of the Mumbai team. Gita of CR, Mumbai, scored a field goal to make it 3-1 and helped her side to win the match comfortably.

The Montessori section of Ryan International School, Urban Estate, had an eventful week with students putting in their best during sports activities that concluded here today.

Ms Anupama Sapra, headmistress of the school, giving away the prizes, stressed on the importance of games.

Results: Boys (Class M-I): simple race — Shrenik 1, Dikshant Gupta 2, Jatin Bhardwaj 3; baloon-bursting — Saransh 1, Satyam Wadhwa 2, Bhavandar Singh 3; banana-eating race — Sumit 1, Gurbachan Singh 2, Ridut Aggarwal 3.

Class M-II: colour race — Nitish 1, Tarundeep Singh 2, Nikhil Kapoor 3; simple race — Jatin Kalia 1, Sargun Soni 2, Anubhav Jain 3; apple-eating race — Karanjot 1, Tarundeep Singh 2, Vagish Vohra 3; frog race — Jagman Deep 1, Devanshu 2, Shamesher 3; under table race- Harveer 1, Sargun Soni 2, Rahul 3.
