5 Punjab girls in Indian softball squad

Ludhiana, February 10
The Punjab Softball Association (PSA) will organise a function where the members of the Punjab state girls’ team, which retained the title, and the men’s team, which finished runners-up in the recently held 25th Senior National Softball Championship at Swai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur, would be felicitated.

According to Mr Sanjiv Gupta, President, PSA, names of five girls from Punjab figure in the list of Indian probables for the coaching camp for the upcoming 8th Asian Softball Championship to be held at Manila (Philippines) later this month. They are Gurpinder Kaur, Harpreet Kaur, Narinder Kaur, Anuradha and Rupinder Kaur. The camp would be held from February 11 to 20 at the polo ground, Mount Abu.

Easy wins for Jaskaran, Gagandeep

Ludhiana, February 10
Jaskaran Singh and Gagandeep Singla recorded easy wins in their respective matches in the Punjab Agricultural University Campus Open Badminton Tournament being held at the Prithipal Singh Indoor Complex of the PAU here.

In the men’s singles, Jaskaran and Gagandeep won without being challenged from their opponents. Jaskaran routed Parminder Singh, 15-1, 15-5, while Gagandeep thrashed Jatin, 15-1, 15-1. In other matches, Anil Kumar Jaiswal, Rajidner Singh and Navdeep Singh also registered wins in straight sets.

In the doubles’ section, the pair of Navdeep and Sachin, along with the duo of Dr S.S. Mahal and Jagir Singh scripted comfortable victories.

Earlier, Dr Darshan Singh, Dean (PG), inaugurated the tournament. Mr A.P.S. Mann, Director Students Welfare, Mr Jaswinder Singh Toor, Joint Director, Sports and Cultural Activities, faculty members and coaches were also present on the occasion.

Results: men’s singles: Gaurav Kumar beat Rayudu, 3-15, 15-9 and 15-7; Jaskaran Singh beat Parminder Singh, 15-1, 15-1; Rajinder Singh beat Vishwajeet Singh, 15-7, 15-7; Sachin Dua beat Rishi Kapoor, 15-3, 13-15 and 15-8; Navdeep Singh beat Aashish Bahia, 15-3, 15-3; Gagandeep Singla beat Jatin, 15-1, 15-1; and Anil Kumar Jaiswal beat Karan Dua, 15-5, 15-5.

Men’s doubles: Vinay Madaan and Chetan Singla beat Vishwajeet and Satish, 15-4, 17-15; S.S. Mahal and Jagir Singh beat Aashish Kumar and Harish Goyal, 15-5, 15-6; Navdeep and Sachin Dua beat Rajinder and Gaurav, 15-2, 15-7; and Akshay and Anil Jaiswal beat Rishi Kapoor and Gagan, 15-10, 15-8. Men’s singles (plus 35): Dr Sanjiv Chouhan beat Dr V.P. Sethi, 15-4, 15-3.
