The Vigilance Department of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited and the Delhi Police in a joint operation, have decided to crack down on a bypass fraud as illegal international calls are known. Such calls originate from a phone booth abroad but end up in the local telephone of an illegal operator in India.

A woman, whose son was murdered last November, alleged that the police have arrested an innocent person while letting the real culprits go scot-free. The woman, identified as Meena from Bahadurgarh, Haryana, has appealed to the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Lal Krishna Advani, the Delhi Lt-Governor, Mr Vijay Kapoor and senior police officials to ensure that the real culprit is punished.

Straw, Villepin scheduled for Scindia lecture

Two held with 10.5 kg heroin
New Delhi, February 4
The Delhi Police Narcotics Cell claimed to have arrested two persons and seized 10.5 kilograms of heroin from their possession. The two arrested persons have been identified as Kalu Ram (33), resident of Jhalawar, Rajasthan and Lal Singh (45), resident of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh.

Rs 1 lakh snatched from woman
Sonepat, February 4
Three car-borne youths reportedly snatched a bag containing Rs 1 lakh from a woman, identified as Phoolwati (65), at Mirzapur Kheri village, about 50 km from here last evening.

Girl commits suicide by taking sulphas tablets

A 15-year-old girl, identified as Pooja, was reported to have taken sulphas tablets in her house at Pio Munayari village, about 15 km from here last evening.

Workshop of painters and sculptors opens

A painters and sculptors workshop that forms a part of the annual Surajkund Crafts Mela celebrations, was inaugurated by noted painter Shamshad Husain on Tuesday. Twenty students from the College of Art, Delhi, arrived to participate in the workshop.

Even common medicines are not available here

Ghaziabad District Magistrate Santosh Yadav flagging off  the Mobile Medicare Unit. In spite of a considerable increase in the budget for medicines during the last two decades, the Sonepat civil hospital and most of the community health centres, dispensaries and primary health centres in the district fail to meet the demand of the medicines, thanks to the failure of the civil surgeon to make the supply of medicines and other life-saving drugs in the health institutions of the district.
