New Delhi, January 31
A Delhi Court has convicted a militant under the Terrorist and Disruptive (Prevention) Act (TADA) of attempting to kill two Delhi Police Sub-Inspectors in Delhi Cantonment 12 years ago.
The Special TADA Judge, Mr Justice J. M. Malik, convicted Amarjeet Singh of Inderpuri in West Delhi after he confessed on January 15, 2004 that he along with his accomplices had attempted to kill Sub-Inspectors Surender and Ram Mehar on April 7, 1992 in Gopinath Bazar at 10.15 pm.
Mr Malik, however, sentenced Amarjeet to the period which he had already spent under the judicial custody in jail. Till his release on January 29, 2004, Amarjeet had spent 6 years, 11 months and 13 days in jail.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 500, which the convict paid before his
release. In an application, Amarjeet had appealed to the court that he should be released from the jail as his co-accused had been convicted and let-off by his predecessor Mr Justice S. N. Dhingra after sentencing them to the period undergone on May 30, 2002.
According to the prosecution, Amarjeet and his accomplices had attempted to shoot at the policemen while they were discharging their official duty.
But before they open fire at them, the policemen charged at them and nabbed Amarjeet. The police had recovered a Webley Scott revolver and four live cartridges from his possession when he was
arrested. His accomplices had fled the spot. The police later arrested the other members of the group.
Amarjeet was convicted under Section 5 of the TADA, 307, 353, 341, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and 5 and 25 of the Arms Act.
