30 veteran athletes picked for national meet

Ludhiana, January 30
Thirty veteran athletes from the district have been selected to represent Punjab at the Silver Jubilee National Veteran Athletic Championship- 2004, to be held at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh from February 13 to 15.

A meeting of the office-bearers of the Ludhiana District Veteran Athletic Association was held here today under the chairmanship of Mr Anurag Verma, the Deputy Commissioner and president of the District Olympic Association, to discuss the matter.

The athletes requested the Deputy Commissioner to fulfil the requirement of an expenditure of Rs 16,500 for travelling charges and other equipment for them.

Mr Verma instructed the Assistant Commissioner (General) to arrange a cheque for Rs 16,500 from the District Olympic Association accounts. The cheque was handed over to Mr Shamsher Singh, the president of the association, on the spot by the Deputy Commissioner.

The contingent includes Shamsher Singh (80), Amar Singh (80), Teja Singh (75), G.S. Deol (75), Amar Singh (75), Kartar Singh (75), Kartar Singh (70), Charan Singh (65), Amar Singh (65), Karnail Singh (65), Kirpal Singh (65), Jagjit Singh (60), A.S. Dhaliwal (60), Jaswant Singh (60), Ajaib Singh (60), Prem Singh Sari (60), M.B. Singh (60), R.S. Sandhu (55), Harpal Singh (55), Lachhman Singh (50), Harpal Singh (50), Tarvinder Singh (50), Amar Chand (50), Balwinder Singh (45), Darshan Singh (45), Paramjit Singh (45), Parminder Singh (45), Adarsh Kumar (40), Swaran Singh (40) and Paramjit Kaur (40).

Mr Kirpal Singh, vice-president, Dr M.B. Singh, secretary, and Mr Rajinder Singh Grewal, treasurer of the association, were also present at the meeting.

College athletics meet begins

Ludhiana, January 30
The annual athletics meet at Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, began today. A large number of students took part.
Earlier, a local councillor inaugurated the meet. The chief guest urged the students to take part in the games along with studies.

Mr Gurbir Singh and Dr Charanjit Mahal, president and Principal of the college, respectively, welcomed the chief guest. The kangaroo race was the main attraction of the day.

First day’s results: 800 m race: Manider Kaur of B Com II-1, Rajpreet Kaur of BA I 2 and Sarabjeet Kaur of BA III 3; javelin throw: Shaminder Kaur of BCom II 1, Arvinder Kaur of BA II 2 and Rupinder Kaur of BA III 3; skipping race: Kamaljit Kaur of BA I 1, Taranjeet Kaur of BSc II (non medical) 2 and Kamaljeet Kaur of BA II 3; 200 m race: Rupinder Kaur of BA III 1, Supreet Kaur of Class XI (Medical) 2 and Parminder Kaur of BA II 3; and shot put: Shaminder Kaur of BCom I 1, Sandeep Kaur of B Com I 2 and Gaganpreet Kaur of BA II 3.

Optra Max Mileage rally

Ludhiana, January 30
In an effort to bring Chevrolet family together and to strengthen the relationship between the customers and the company, General Motors India has been organising customer loyalty programmes for a long time. After the success of the first three Optra car rallies held in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, GM India has now brought the rally to Ludhiana. General Motors India is organising the “Optra Max Mileage Magic” from Ludhiana to Chandigarh culminating at Shimla on February 1, 2004. To make this event more exciting and challenging, all the participants will be given the task of clocking the best fuel mileage in their Optra.

The rally will start from BPCL outlet near Dada Motors, Ludhiana, on January 31. All the participants will report at the starting point. A fleet of around 50 cars will be flagged off from Dada Motors to Shimla via Chandigarh. TNS
