J&K Cabinet meeting put off Jammu, January 30 The meeting was to settle the issue pertaining to the appointment of the Chairman of the Public Service Commission and the chief of the Electricity Regulatory Authority. This matter could not be decided during the January 25 Cabinet meeting because the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Mangat Ram Sharma, walked out of the meeting in a huff when the Tourism Minister, Mr G.H. Mir, opposed the choice of candidates for the two posts made by Mr Sharma. Mr Sharma had favoured Mr K.B. Pillai for the post of Chairman of the PSC and Mr J.A. Khan for the post of Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Authority. Mr Mir wanted the posts to go to local serving or retired officers. Since the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, is in Mecca as head of the Indian Haj delegation, Mr Sharma had been authorised to chair the Cabinet meeting. Official sources said Mr Sharma wanted all Cabinet ministers to approve his choice. The sources said Congress ministers were divided over the matter. A senior Congress leader told this correspondent that if Mr Sharma had to stage a walkout from the Cabinet meeting, he should have done it on vital issues like non-implementation of the Wazir Committee report, delay in setting up the Delimitation Commission and the Finance Commission. Behind-the-scenes efforts are on to pacify Mr Sharma and the Cabinet meeting is likely to be held here tomorrow. |
