UK expert delivers lecture on cancer
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 29
In past, prostate cancer could not be diagnosed until symptoms appeared. But by that time, the cancer cells used to produce secondaries and spread to several parts of the body. At present, there is emphasis on early diagnosis and early radical treatment, said Dr David Cranston, Senior Consultant Urologist and Clinical Director at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital NHS Trust, University of Oxford, UK. He was delivering a guest lecture on ‘High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) for Cancer’ at CMCH here yesterday.

Dr Cranston is a pioneer in the application of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) in the treatment of liver and kidney cancer. This technology uses the energy source to be focussed. Dr Cranston has special interests in Angiogenesis in bladder cancer and the Oxford Laser Prostate clinical trial.

Blood in urine (Haematuria) warrants immediate attention, pointed our Dr Cranston. In the elderly, the most common cause of blood in urine is due to the cancer of the urinary bladder. Elaborate tests and Cystoscopy help confirm the diagnosis, he said, adding that most of the bladder tumours could be treated by endoscopic operation without incision.

Dr Kim Mammen, Professor and Head, Department of Urology at the CMC Hospital, emphasised that bladder cancer could also be treated now with radical operation where the urinary bladder is removed and the lower urinary tract is reconstructed with intestinal segments.

Milkha not hopeful of Olympic medals
Our Sports Reporter

Ludhiana, January 29
Flying Sikh Milkha Singh is not much hopeful of the Indian athletes winning any medal in the upcoming Olympics scheduled to be held at Athens later this year. The veteran athlete, who missed a medal by a whisker in the 1960 Rome Olympics, expressed these views while talking to reporters at the Khalsa College for Women here, where he had come to preside over the prize distribution function of the college’s annual sports meet.

Milkha Singh was of the view that if the present standing of the Indian athletes was any indication, we stood nowhere in the international competitions. He expressed happiness about India’s hosting the Commonwelath Games in 2010, but maintained that we had more than six years at hand and should start preparing the athletes for the mega event.

When asked about India’s chances of winning any medal in the track events, Milkha Singh replied that except for Anju George (long jump), he was pessimistic about athletes’ performance. “We could win a medal or two in rifle shooting or weightlifting but we are lagging far behind in athletics,” he observed.

He said he had suggested to the Indian Olympic Association and the Amateur Athletics Federation of India to start preparing the players right now as, being the host country, India should fare well in the Commonwealth Games.
