Drug companies, Health Deptt on warpath

Mega pharmaceutical companies and the District Health Department are on a collision course the issue is pricing of certain essential drugs.

According to a press note, the companies have flooded the market with dietary supplements containing substances which have a harmful affect on the human body.

Even though the Drug Inspector had served notices on the companies, the latter had pleaded that they had been authorised to use such ingredients for these products.

All these products contained one or two therapeutically useful substances.

However, a particular company made a popular product, Revital, which contains the herb ginseng, which had allegedly caused several deaths in Germany recently, the press note said.

Book on eye care released

The UT Administrator, Justice OP Verma (Retd.) today underlined the need for taking preventive measures for eye care. Speaking after releasing a book entitled ‘Guide to Healthy Eyes’ written by Dr R.Kumar, senior consultant and eye specialist at Punjab Raj Bhavan, Justice Verma said eyes may be the first indicators of a change in our body health like diabetes, hypertension and brain tumour.

Justice Verma said adequate care needed to be taken at various stages of life. Speaking on the occasion, Dr R. Kumar said to ensure health of our eyes, a few simple facts went a long way in preventing serious vision-threatening problems.

The mantra was regular eye check-up and prompt remedial measures. Children and the elderly must consult an eye-specialist at periodic intervals. “Don’t neglect an eye symptom viz less vision, pain, irritation, redness, flashes of light, and discharge”, he added.

Verma for drives to check adulteration

Stressing upon the need for a regular drive to check food adulteration, The UT Administrator, Justice O.P. Verma, yesterday ordered the regular sampling of food products in the city. He said an Executive Magistrate or SDM should accompany the team of the Health Department to rule out harassment.

He asked the Health Secretary, Mr Karan Avtar Singh, to supervise the deputation of teams in this regard.

The Administrator also said land should be acquired to develop a green strip at the entry of the city. He asked the Municipal Commissioner to have a re-look at the proposed sites of BoT bus queue shelters in view of the public transport scheme to be made operational by August 15.

DAV-8 enter Parle final

Chandigarh, January 21
DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, entered final of the PCA Parle Inter-School Cricket Tournament for under-17. In the semi-finals played today, they overpowered ARKS, Patiala, by 133 runs. They will now vie with DAV, Amritsar.

Brief scores: DAV, Chandigarh: 215 runs for seven in 40 overs (Deepak Saini 58, Sidharth 59, Abhijeet 43, Sandeep 27, and Gauri Shankar 3 for 25).

ARKS: 82 runs all out (Gurpreet 26, Laxmi 14, Vikas 4 for 13, Sandeep Bhattacharya 3 for 13 and Gaurav Chopra 2 for six.

Football meet

The Chandigarh Football Association will hold the Chandigarh Junior Boys Football Championship for DAV trophy to be held from January 31. The players born on or after January 1, 1985, will be eligible to take part in the championship.

Mr Ravinder Talwar, president of the association, said the referees examination for Class C and B will be held in the first week of February.

PU tennis team win bronze

Tennis eves of Panjab University bagged the bronze in the just concluded All-India-Inter Varsity Lawn Tennis Meet held at KSLTA Cubbon Park, Bangalore. In this meet, Osmania University, Hyderabad, won the gold, while Madras University, Chennai, the silver.

Giving details of the match, Mr Baldev Singh, coach, said, PU girls played well and lost in a tough fight to Madras University in the semi-final 2-3. In the match for the third place, PU trounced Delhi University 3-0. Neha Singh of PU won her first singles by beating Vishika Chhetri of Delhi 6-4, 2-1 (conceded), then Harsimran Kaur Bedi defeated Samaya Jalali 7-6, 6-0 to surge ahead 2-0. In the doubles, Neha Singh and Harsimran Kaur beat Samaya Jalali and Mayuri 6-0, 6-1.

SI Daya Nand promoted DSP on CAT orders

The senior most Inspector of the Chandigarh police, Mr Daya Nand, was today promoted as DSP, a position which he held for 11 years before being demoted in 2001. His elevation was on a direction from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

Mr Daya Nand was the first Scheduled Castes’ Sub-Inspector with the Union Territory police. His promotion has been made in the general category.

Mr Daya Nand was not included in the list-G,a list of those who are eligible for promotion as DSP. He has not yet been handed over any charge. The posts of DSP (CID) and DSP (Security) are vacant at present.

Mr Daya Nand was demoted in June 2001 after having served for 11 years as DSP on the direction of the CAT then. The Chandigarh Administration had said then his confidential report had not been prepared properly.

The intervention of the CAT had led to Inspector Om Prakash getting elevated. Mr Daya Nand has now been promoted ahead of Inspector Inderjeet and Inspector Jaggi who figured in the G-list prepared in May last year. Mr Daya Nand is due to retire in November.

UT police reshuffle

Chandigarh, January 21
Station House Officer (SHO) of Sector 26 Tirath Singh was today replaced by Inspector Jarnail Singh, who was additional SHO in Sector 17 prior to the posting.

Mr Tirath Singh replaces Mr Gurnam Singh in the Police Control Room. The latter has been posted with the Sector 17 police station as Additional SHO.

Inspector B. S. Chaddha, who returned from a UN posting in Kosovo this week, has been sent to the Economic Offence Wing.

The Economic Offence Wing will now have three Inspectors instead of two.
