Hockey tourney

Prithipal Academy of Ludhiana and Nankana Sahib Public School of Kila Raipur entered the final of the first district-level Hockey Tournament (u-14) being organised by the Youngsters Hockey Revival Club at the astro turf ground of the Punjab Agricultural University on Sunday.

In their respective matches, Prithipal Academy beat Government High School, Narangwal, 8-1, while Nanakna Sahib Public School outplayed Doraha Hawks 2-1 to register second consecutive victories. The final will be held on Monday.

The first match between Nankana Sahib Public School and Doraha Hawks turned out to be a well-contested affair. Much to the chagrin of the Kila Raipur lads, Doraha Hawks went into the early lead when Jagjit Singh pierced through the defence line and rolled the ball into the net.

In the second half, Kila Raipur boys reorganised themselves and began to dictate the terms. They found the equaliser in the 36th minute through Sandeep Singh. Seven minutes later, Sandeep again found the target to put his side ahead 2-1. Doraha Hawks players tried their best to restore the parity but luck eluded them as they missed a couple of scoring chances.

In the second match, Government High School, Narangwal, failed to match up their strong opponents, Prithipal Academy, as they lost it without posing any challenge to the local lads 1-8. Gurdip Singh (1), Taranpreet Singh (4) and Sukhbir Singh (3) were the scorers for the academy, while the lone scorer for Narangwal was Deepinderjit Singh.

The organisers also conducted a (u-12) match between Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, and Youngsters Hockey Club in which the former, with the help of a brace scored by Yadvinder Singh, emerged winners 2-0.
