Transporters told to take urgent steps to check HIV
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 7
In order to keep the HIV epidemic under check and control its spread the Vice-President of India Bhairon Singh Shekhawat today asked transporters to take urgent steps to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

While inaugurating the one-day convention of All-India Transporters Welfare Association (AITWA), Mr Shekhawat said that transporters should also strive to provide drivers, cleaners and other workers with a healthy work environment. He also flagged off AITWA’s ‘Rastoon Ka Rahee -Jaagriti Rath’, an initiative through which the association plans to travel across India, spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS, especially among truckers.

He said: “After, South Africa, India is perceived as the most vulnerable country to be infected with HIV/AIDS. Jaagriti Rath is an innovative way of reaching to the transporters community, where HIV/AIDS is spreading like an epidemic due to lack of knowledge and guidance.”

“This campaign also aims at instilling a positive attitude among the society towards this issue, which would help to further arrest the spread. Thus, this step, taken by AITWA, is commendable and would certainly help in making Indian community an educated society,” Shekhawat said.

On the occasion, Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma said that steps should be taken for the welfare of truckers and other workers in the transport field. “We are initiating a social security cover for one million workers in the unorganised sector under which they would be given medical, pension and insurance benefits,” Mr Verma said.

Roadways staff block traffic, seek GM’s transfer
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, January 7
While protesting against the anti-employees attitude of the General Manager of Sonepat Roadways Depot, the local roadways employees today parked buses on the roads outside the depot and as a result of it, vehicular traffic remained blocked for more than four hours on the roads leading to Murthal Chawk and sectors 14 and 15.

Later, the representatives of the employees met the deputy commissioner and handed over a memorandum demanding immediate transfer of the general manager. They also demanded that the GM should not be given power of writing annual confidential report (ACR) of the employees.

The roadways employees took this action following an incident on Monday, when a manager attempted to commit suicide by trying to jump from the first floor of the depot’s building after his meeting with the GM. However, he was caught by an employee before jumping from the floor, but after shouting for a while he became unconscious and was admitted in local civil hospital.

The GM was squarely blamed by the employees for allegedly torturing the manager and even other employees of the depot.

However, the General Manager, Mr Harish Chander Jain, categorically refuted the allegations by explaining that the manager was called for routine official work and it was baseless to allege that the manager was tortured.

He said that the manager perhaps is having some family problems and remaining mentally upset due to domestic problems.
