An interesting study conducted on out patients, by the Department of Skin of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital by Dr Aman Dua, Senior Resident under he guidance of Dr Alka Dogra, has revealed some interesting findings.
The study was conduced on 50 patients having hand and feet diseases for a period of two years to find out the utility of psoralen plus UVA light (PUVA) therapy or light therapy for treating various diseases like psoriasis (scaling of skin), leukoderma and lichen planus (purple coloured eruption on the body).
Encouraging results had been obtained, which would help the patients suffering from these diseases in the long run. After the research, it had been found that PUVA therapy was an effective modality of treatment in hands and feet diseases and should tried in as many patients for future benefits. The patients were given treatment three times a week until clearing of the disease. The conventional treatment of these diseases depended upon steroids and anti-biotic drugs and had certain side effects too.
“But with PUVA therapy side effects are minimal since we are exposing only the hands and feet of these patients to UV rays. The results are comparable and better with PUVA therapy,” said Dr Dua.
Dr Alka Dogra said that psoriasis was a very common disorder which was usually resistant to treatment, especially of hand and feet, Remission could be seen after 20-22 sittings of PUVA therapy.
Leukoderma or patching of skin was a cosmetically disfiguring chronic disorder of the lip-tip variety that involved the lips, the hands and feet. Equally encouraging results were found in patients of lichen planus, which was usually a chronic itchy skin condition, said Dr Dogra.
