Malwa College NSS camp concludes

Samrala, January 7
The 10-day NSS camp organised at Malwa College, Bondli-Samrala, concluded here today. An impressive cultural function was organised on the occasion by NSS volunteers. Dr Kulwinder Kaur, programme officer, read out the camp report. She said volunteers repaired the bus stop and 2 -km- long link road leading to Dayalpura village. Besides the college campus, they also cleaned the streets of Dayalpura village with the active support of the women of the village.

A free medical camp was also organised at Dayalpura village. Over 200 patients suffering from dental, eye-related and general ailments were examined on the occasion.

An awareness rally was also organised during the camp. The volunteers passed through 13 villages, raising slogans against social evils like dowry, drugs and corruption . In the evening session of the camp, lectures by various scholars were also arranged. Prominent among those who delivered the lectures were Dr Gurcharan Singh, Prof Hamdardvir Nausheharvi, Prof Baldeep Singh and Mrs Kailash Batla. The college principal, Dr Parminder Singh, used to visit the camp daily and address the students. Dr M.S. Bains, Panjab University, NSS coordinator, also inspected the camp . Prof Satnam Singh, Prof Sangeeta Rani and Prof Manoj Kumar also shared their views with the volunteers. After concluding function the volunteers left for a three- day tour to Paonta Sahib, Dehra Dun and Massourie. OC

SDM inaugurates Green Valley School

Ahmedgarh, January 7
Dr Indu Malhotra, SDM, Malerkotla, while addressing a gathering after inaugurating Green Valley Public School at local Jandali Road, said "deteriorating standard of education in border states has resulted in decreased contribution from the North in the Central pool of administration ." She called upon the educational institutions to serve the society by providing quality education at low cost.

A cultural programme was presented on the occasion by the Panjab Lok Kala Manch and students of Government Senior Secondary School, Kanganwal.

Mr Joginder Singh, Executive Magistrate , Mr Manmohan Kaushik , Mr Rajnish Sharma Guddoo President, Municipal Council , and Ms Sonia Gupta, Principal of the school, also spoke on the occasion.

An economist with poet’s heart

Romesh Ahsaas is a man of economic but at the same time his heart bleeds when he comes across any one dying of hunger or starvation.

Dr R.K. Lekhi, as he is known in his professional circles, apart from being a post-graduate and Ph.D in economics, got D.Litt in 1994 on the topic, 'Problems and prospects of privatisation of public enterprises in India with reference to global trends'. He taught economics at Government Shivalik College, Naya Nangal, for 25 years and is at present working at Government College, Karamsar, Rara Sahib, Ludhiana.

A resident of Lekhi Niwas, Sahnewal, Dr Lekhi, popularly known as Dr Ramesh Ahsaas contrary to his profession, is a poet. He well known in Hindi literature and has written 11 books consisting of novels, short stories, biographies and long plays.

He received the first prize in the year 1983-84 for short story writing 'Tum Lot Jahao'. He won state honour from the Hindi Sahir Parishad in March, 1988. He received an award from the Punjab Sahitya Kala Manch in May 1994.

Dr Ahsaas feels that the intellectual journey of his life has just begun and the ultimate goal is far to seek!
