A devastating 5 for 27 bowling spell by right-arm spinner Imran Khan enabled South Africa defeat Sri Lanka by 63 runs in the Commonwealth Under-19 Cricket Championship at the Devi Lal Sports Complex in Gurgaon.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field. Though the Lankans succeeded in restricting South Africa to 187 for 6 in 30 overs, their batsmen failed to capitalise on the bowlers’ feat as they capitulated to Imran Khan’s spin magic.

Scores: South Africa: 187 for 6 in 30 overs (De Villers 35, Clessis 33 n o, Dunil Kumar 3 for 36, Isuru 2 for 26).

Sri Lanka: 123 all out in 27.2 overs (Desilva 37, Imran Khan 5 for 27).

Lal Bahadur Shastri win

A deadly bowling feat of 5 for 23 by Pankaj Sasun and a dashing half century by Sobers Joban helped Lal Bahadur Shastri Coaching Centre defeat Punjab National Bank by 76 runs in an A-II Division match of the DDCA League at the RSKP ground.

Scores: Lal Bahadur Shastri Coaching Centre: 178 for 6 in 35 overs (Sobers Joban 57, Sonu Singh 54, Sudhir Kumar 2 for 37).

PNB: 102 all out in 31.3 overs (Rajesh Kumar 23, Pankaj Sasun 5 for 23, Rakesh Khari 2 for 5).

In another match, an all-round display by Suresh Kohli (54 and 3 for 23) helped DDA beat J N Golden by 13 runs in an A-II Division league tie at the RSC ground.

Punjab and Sind Bank lift hockey title

New Delhi, January 6
Punjab and Sind Bank pipped Punjab Police 4-1, after leading by 4-0 at half time, in the final of the sixth Chatrapati Shivaji Hockey Tournament for the Dhyan Chand Cup at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

The Bankmen scored two early goals, and added two more before the interval, to virtually ensure the cup for themselves. Punjab Police put up a stiff fight in the second session, but the Bank defence held out the threat to cruise home comfortably.

Rajwinder Singh converted a penalty corner in the 9th minute to put PSB in the lead. Skipper Baljit Singh Chandi then crossed from the right flank, and Kulwinder Singh connected it to score the second goal. Ravi Pal added a brace of goals to complete the first half scoring.

On resumption, Punjab Police fought hard and earned a penalty stroke four minutes into the second session, which was converted by Satwinder Singh.

The prizes were distributed by All India Council of Sports president Vijay Kumar Malhotra.

Rajiv Gandhi Judo in Lucknow

New Delhi, January 6
Over 20 countries will participate in the Rajiv Gandhi International Judo Championship to be held in Lucknow from February 6 to 10.
Judo Federation of India (JFI) president Jagdish Tytler said the Rajiv Gandhi International Judo Championship would offer an excellent opportunity for the Indian talent to show their mettle. The event will be organised by the Uttar Pradesh Judo Federation under the aegis of the JFI.

Over 300 men and women from various parts of the world would vie for the 16 gold medals at stake in eight weight categories.

Organising secretary Munavar Anzar said Lucknow was fully equipped to host a championship of this magnitude. He said in the past, Lucknow had hosted two international and nine national tournaments and one international referees seminar in Lucknow. He said two judo mats from Belgium had already been imported.

G E Capital beat City Bank by 50 runs with Rodney Charles top-scoring (35) in the Malaysia Flying Sixer A Side Cricket Tournament at the Jamia Milia ground. In other matches, Aviva beat KPMG by four wickets, SPCNL beat Xansa by one wicket, NIIT beat Clintus by six runs, E-Fund beat NIIT B by 23 runs, Hero Honda beat Gail India by six runs, Vama beat Indorama by four wickets and Delphi beat IPCNL by 22 runs.

NIIT sail into final

NIIT defeated GE Capital by 35 runs and entered the final of the seventh DG Phadkar Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Venkateshwara College ground.

Scores: NIIT: 207 for 7 in 25 overs (P Rajkumar 61, Ashish Guha 52, Kapil Gupta 22, Karthik S 3 for 40). GE Capital: 172 all out in 25 overs (Arijit Mukherjee 50, Surinder Rawat 27, Karthik S 24, Rahul Dixit 15 n o, Gagan Adalka 4 for 33).

Eventus Cricket Cup

G E Capital defeated Essex Farms by 68 runs in the final of the third Eventus Cricket Tournament at the Palam ground.

Scores: G E Capital: 236 for 6 in 30 overs (Joginder Sehgal 65, Rodney Charles 60, Arijit Mukherjee 36, Ravi Gupta 2 for 55, Sanjiv Berry 1 for 35).

IPCL beat EIL

IPCL (Baroda) defeated EIL by two wickets and entered the final of the 24th PSPB Mini League Cricket Tournament.

Dena Bank enter semis

Dena Bank defeated Malik Academy by six wickets and entered the semi-final of the AFC Cricket Tournament at the Govt School ground.

Rajiv Ghai and Neha Aggarwal topranked for 2003

Rajiv Ghai of Indian Oil and Neha Aggarwal of Manav Sthali have been topranked in the men’s singles and women’s singles respectively as per the Delhi Ranking for the year 2003 released by Delhi Table Tennis Association organising secretary Hukam Singh.

Neha Aggarwal had made a history when she was top-ranked in the sub-junior girls and girls section as well.

Men’s singles: Rajiv Ghai, Himansh P Kala, Nitin Mahajan, Rajat Chopra, Ajay Jha, Abhishek Puri, Mrinal Mendal, Ashish Duklan.

An all-round performance by Shivam Sharma (3 for 34 and 52) helped U.K. Cricket World defeat R P Academy by five wickets in a league round of the fifth R G Williams Memorial Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Frank Anthony ground.

Scores: RP Academy: 189 for 4 in 35 overs (Mukul Dagar 66, Varun Thakur 41, Shivam Sharma 3 for 34). U.K Cricket World: 192 for 5 in 30 overs (Shivam Sharma 52, A Singh 30, Pawan Negi 3 fo 42).

Dronacharya in semis

Dronacharya Cricket Foundation beat GMCA by 86 runs and entered the semi-final of the first Nehru Public School Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

United Delhi Cricket Academy got the better of Young Friends Club on points basis and entered the semi-final of the Aviva Young Achiever Two-Day Cricket Tournament for Under-13.
