Jammu, January 6
The APHC (Abhas) leadership has denied reports mentioning that a date had been fixed for a dialogue between the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, and Kashmiri separatists but the talks had to be deferred because the Kashmir Mirwaiz, Maulvi Umar Farooq was unwell.

According to the Chairman of APHC, Maulvi Abhas Ansari, "we have neither received any invitation in writing nor were we informed about any tentative dates on telephone."

Maulvi Ansari told this correspondent today "the ball for starting a dialogue was in the court of the Government of India."

Referring to newspaper reports that the Centre had suggested a date for talks and it was for the separatists to convey tentative dates, convenient to each side, for the dialogue to begin, the APHC Chairman said, "We do not know who sent the invitation and who received it."

The Maulana said, "We await a formal invitation for talks along with the agenda which has to be discussed. If we are satisfied that the agenda includes the issue of settlement of the Kashmir dispute for the restoration of peace and normalcy we will accept the offer for the dialogue."

He made it clear that "the dialogue should not be centered around the formation of government as had happened prior to the Sheikh-Indira accord in 1974." He said "the Sheikh-Indira accord had simply resulted in the formation of a new government headed by Sheikh Abdullah. We are not for it."

"In 1974 I was among those who criticised Sheikh Abdullah for entering into an agreement which did not aim at the settlement of the Kashmir issue," Maulvi Ansari said.

He said "we are for a purposeful dialogue. We want peace and normalcy to return to the state and that was possible only when the Kashmir dispute was settled through trilateral parleys."
