Sprinting her way to success
Anil Datt

Ludhiana, December 25
Manpreet Kaur Ahluwalia, a local girl, is sprinting her way to success. A class IX student of GGN Public School, Ludhiana, Manpreet is all set to prove her mettle in the national as well as international-level tournaments. She began to dominate track events during the 2000-2001 academic year when she was adjudged ‘best athlete’ and was decorated with this title next year also.

Manpreet Kaur tasted the success for the first time last year when, in the under-14 year group, she came out triumphant to clinch the gold medal in the 100m race during the Inter- District Cluster Games held at Dhuri. This achievement paved her way to be selected in the state team for the National School Games-2002 conducted at Bhubneshwar (Orissa). However, she failed to finish among the medal winners there and she had to content with the seventh position.

Manpreet continued to hog limelight in the state-level cluster tournaments, annexing a gold medal in the inter-16 year group at Patiala last year.

Her talent was acclaimed at the national-level early this month during the National School Games held in Mehsana (Gujarat) where she gave anxious moments to her rivals in the 100 metres to bag a bronze medal.

Appreciating Manpreet’s efforts at the state and the national-level tournaments, Mr R.S. Grewal, Principal, GGN Public School, felicitated her at the school’s annual function. Mr Grewal gave her a cash prize of Rs 1,100 and a trophy.

Besides sports, Manpreet is good at studies. She is a regular contributor to the school magazine for the past four years.

For her achievements in the field of sports and studies, Manpreet gives credit to Ms Sandeep Kaur, in charge sports, GGN Public School, and her mother, Ms Sushma Ahluwalia. One hopes that in the near future, Manpreet’s efforts will stand in good stead in becoming her cynosure of all eyes in athletics.
