DSA to hold open trials for players

New Delhi, December 23
The Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) will hold open trials-cum-coaching camp to select the Delhi team for participation in the 40th Junior National Football Championship for the Dr B C Roy Trophy (North Zone) to be held from January 20 in Himachal Pradesh.

The trials will be held at the Ambedkar Stadium on December 26 (Friday) between 2 pm and 4 pm. Eligible players can register their names, along with original date of birth certificate, with the DSA secretary on December 26 at the Ambedkar Stadium.

The main round of the B C Roy Trophy will be held after the zonal qualifying rounds in North, West, East, South and North-East, with 30 teams competing on a league-cum-knock out basis. The zonal champions will qualify for the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final league line-up will consist of champions from each zone, defending champions Karnataka, runners-up Goa and hosts Jharkhand.

Delhi have been grouped together with Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttranchal.

Chowrasia on second spot in money list

Mukesh Kumar, who finished tied fourth in the Tata Open Golf Tournament in Jamshedpur on Sunday, jumped to the top spot on the Order of Merit list with a season’s earnings of Rs 5,61,690. The four-time ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’ moved to his familiar position for the first time in the current season with nine top ten finishes, including two victories after the 11th leg of the Hero Honda Tour.

However, with almost half the season yet to be completed, Mukesh, for the first time, faces a threat of relinquishing his title as SSP Chowrasia, the winner of thhe last two events—the NGC Open and the Tata Open—made big strides to jump to the second position in just a couple of weeks. .

The diminutive pro from Kolkata is currently in second position with a total of Rs 5,52,765 from 11 starts. He has as many as six top-ten finishes and is a mere Rs 8,925 short of Mukesh’s earnings. Also in the fray is ‘Rookie of the year’ Ashok Kumar, who finished second in the Tata Open, after the play-off. The 21-year-old trails Chowrasia by just Rs 155.

The Delhi lad has amassed Rs 5,52,610 after taking part in 10 out of 11 events and has seven top ten finishes, including a victory—the Servo Masters in Digboi. Digvijay Singh, who skipped the IAIA Open and went on to play in Japan, was pushed to the fourth spot, after being the leader for two weeks. His season’s earnings stand at Rs 5,16,323 from nine events. He also has seven top-ten finishes to his credit.

Feroz Ali, who was unlucky to finish third after leading the tournament for most part of the time at the Tata Open, jumped to the seventh position from 12th last week. He now has pocketed Rs 3,67,240 from ten tournaments and also has a victory at the Cotton City Open to his credit.

Rishab, Radhika win  in badminton

Rishab Talreja and Radhika scored comfortable victories in the boys and girls section respectively in the third Indian Oil Badminton Talent Contest held at the Ludlo Castle School court, organised by the Delhi Badminton Association.

Following are the complete results: Boys Class VII and VIII: Rishab Talreja beat Rishab Sharma 15-4, Pankaj Kapoor b Manish 15-0, Abhishek Sahi b Rishab Oswal 15-2, Yakshup Chopra b Rishab Sharma 15-13, Gobind Singh Bisht b Altamsh 15-2.

Boys class V and VI: Sumit Kumar b Lucky Singh 15-0, Mohd Shibabh b Jagpreet 15-10, Manish b Jatin Maggo 15-1. Girls Class V and VI: Radhika b Garim Sharma 11-6, Nikhita Sawhney b Tanya 11-4.

Boys Class 111 and IV: Aarif b Raman Verma 15-4, Virinder Yadav b Mayank Sharma 15-3.

Soccer for a good cause

The Delhi State AIDS Control Society, players of Delhi Police and the All-India Football Federation joined hands to organise a football match at the Ambedkar Stadium on Tuesday with the aim of spreading the message in the society that casual contact like hugging, shaking hands, working/staying in the same place or office do not spread AIDS and the stigma attached to the disease could be eliminated.

Delhi Health Minister Dr Yoganand Shastri, who inaugurated the match, said HIV/AIDS has emerged as a socio-economic health problem world wide since over two decades and over 45 lakh people infected with HIV in India and about 25,000 of them in Delhi alone.

Shanker stars in Keshav Puram’s victory

New Delhi, December 23
A hard-hitting 62, off 37 balls with the aid of two sixes and seven boundaries, by captain Bhola Shanker and an all-round display by Rajeev Sharma (50, 3x23) helped Keshav Puram Club defeat S B Youth Academy by 73 runs in the President’s Estate Challenge Cup Cricket Tournament at the President’s Body Guards ground.

Scores: Keshav Puram: 188 for 5 in 25 overs (Bhola Shanker 62, Rajeev Sharma 50, Sandeep Kumar 42, Ashish Raj 3 for 45, Vijay Deswal 2 for 36).

S B Youth Academy: 115 all out in 24.2 overs (Kapil Sharma 44, Nitin 20, Ashwini Kumar Murli 3 for 15, Sandeep Kumar 3 for 23, Rajeev Sharma 2 for 8, Bhaskar 2 for 22).

Cricket for disabled

New Delhi, December 23
The Delhi Cricket Association for the disabled will organise a ‘Triangular Series’ among Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha from December 25 to 27 at the PG Hostel ground of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

Players with over 40 per cent disability are eligible to participate in the tournament. The tournament will be inaugurated by Additional Commissioner of Police Karnal Singh on December 25 at 10 am.

Ganga School lift hockey title

Ganga International School, Hiran Kudna defeated Shah Satnamji School, Sirsa 3-2 in the final of the All-India CBSE Hockey Tournament held at Chandigarh.
Anupam, Satish and Samsher found the target for Ganga while Rajan scored both the goals for Sirsa. The Ganga School team were felicitated by principal Mrs H Sraw and manager Sushil Gupta.
