2 killed, 5 hurt in factory boiler blast

Ludhiana, December 1
Two workers were killed and five injured, four of them seriously, when a steam boiler in a rice polish oil factory in Mandiani village, near Mullanpur Dakha, burst in the wee hours today.

Rusticated student throws acid on teacher
Ludhiana, December 1
In a bone-chilling incident, a Class X student, his father and two other accomplices allegedly threw acid on the face of a schoolteacher here, holding him responsible for the school’s decision of throwing out the student from the institution on disciplinary grounds.

DCC chief’s shop burgled
Ludhiana, December 1
Unidentified burglars broke into the shop of the District Congress Committee (Urban) chief, Mr Jagmohan Sharma, in the Industrial Area-A here last night and decamped with cash worth Rs 10,000. In another such incident, an amount of Rs 65,000 was also stolen from Deepali Paints in the Focal Point area.

4 labourers drugged, looted in train

Ludhiana, December 1
Four migrant labourers travelling from Amritsar in Jan Sewak Express were allegedly drugged and looted by some unidentified miscreants this afternoon. The Railway Police was informed about the unconscious labourers by other co-passengers.

It is shocking but true that even the horses brought for sale at the famous animal fair organised at Sonpur in Bihar recently were classified into various castes like brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras. This was stated by the local Pashu Sewa Samiti in a press statement issued here.

22 students receive prizes

Twentytwo students who had won prizes in an inter-school drawing and painting competition organised by Pidilite Industries last week were honoured at BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here today. Students from 28 schools of the district had participated in the competition at the Guru Nanak Khalsa High School for Boys, Gujjarkhan Campus, on November 20.

“Remixes can be both good and bad. There are so many beautiful songs sung by the popular singers like Gita Dutt, Kishore Kumar, Mangeshkar sisters. Now that they are being remixed, the present generation is atleast aware of the eternally beautiful songs. That is the good side. The flip side is that some songs in the ‘remix’ just get killed,” said Mohini Singh from Mumbai. Mohini was talking the media this afternoon. She is in the city to perform tonight.

Artists honoured at sabhyacharak mela

The much-awaited Devki Devi Yaadgari Sabhyacharak Mela, jointly organised by the departments of Punjabi and English, began on a colourful note today. The first part of the programme was presided over by Dr Mr Amarjit Singh Dua, Dean, College Development Council, Guru Nanak Dev University. The chief guest Mr Ramesh Kapoor, Dean, College Development Council, PU, inaugurated the cultural programme by lighting the traditional lamp.

HE last thing one would expect from a policeman is poetry. Nonetheless, Parwinder Bhammipuri, a Constable with the Punjab police, is a born poet. Writing Punjabi songs, poems and ghazals is his domain. While in college, he used to write short stories and poems for the college magazine. He has learnt to play harmonium and aspires to be a singer as well.

Stigma, discrimination haunt AIDS patients

The “stigma and discrimination” against people living with HIV/AIDS is one of the major reason, that is not presenting the real picture of the actual number of people living with the killer disease. As per the figures with the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, 263 cases were reported from all districts of Punjab till August 2003.

Encourage hockey at college level, says national coach

If we want to compete with other nations in hockey, we should encourage the game at the college level. This was stated by the national hockey coach, Rajinder Singh, here today. He was in the city to preside over a meeting of the Ludhiana Sports Welfare Association of which he is also the chairman.

Gurcharan declared best boxer
Khanna, December 1
Boxers from Khanna have won the State Boxing Championship by securing five gold and two silver medals at the 19th Punjab State Sub Junior Boxing Championship organised by the District Amateur Boxing Association, Ludhiana, at A.S. College, Khanna, from November 28 to 30. Gurcharan Singh of Khanna was declared best boxer in the championship.
