Amritsar athletes shine at Punjab meet

Athletes from Amritsar hogged the limelight taking their medals tally to eight gold, four silver and as many as bronze medals on the second day of the 49th Punjab State Schools Inter-District Athletics Meet for boys and girls (u-14, u-17 and u-19) being organised by the Education Department at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Results: girls (u-19 years) 800m — Sukhjeet Kaur of Bathinda 2.18.15 secs 1, Savita of Gurdaspur 2.23.31 secs 2, Narinder Kaur of Patiala 2.24.36; (u-17 years) — Manpreet Kaur of Amritsar 2.23. 31 secs 1, Amandeep of Bathinda 2.24.31 secs, Naseema Begum of Ropar 2.36.88 secs.

Punjab Circle beat Orissa Circle 7-0 in hockey

Ludhiana, November 26
Hosts Punjab Circle registered an emphatic 7-0 victory over Orissa Circle to begin their campaign on a strong note in the inaugural match of the 17th All-India Postal Hockey Tournament, which began at the astroturf ground of Punjab Agricultural University here today.

The match between Punjab Circle and Orissa Circle proved to be a mismatch as the hosts came out triumphant without facing any resistance.

Punjab Circle drew first blood in the 12th minute through Gursatinder Singh. Dharampal Singh added two goals to the tally (25th minute and 35th minute) to increase the lead.

After changing ends, Punjab Circle increased the lead through Balwinder Singh in the 42nd minute and then in the 45th minute through Nirmal Singh. Lakhwinder Singh pumped in two goals in quick succession to help his team win 7-0.

In the second match, Tamil Nadu Circle scored an easy 9-3 win over Jharkhand Circle after leading 4-1 at halftime. Mr Chander Shekhar, Inspector-General of Police, and Senior Vice-President, Indian Hockey Federation, inaugurated the five-day tournament.

Ludhiana to host Punjab, Haryana cricket ties

Ludhiana, November 26
Ludhiana will be the second centre in the state after Patiala to host inter-state junior (under-19 and 22 years) cricket matches. Giving this information, Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA), said on instructions of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Punjab Cricket Association has asked the association to organise the matches between Punjab and Haryana in the city.

The PAU cricket ground will be the venue of the match between Punjab and Haryana (under-19 years) slated for December 1. The second match will be played between Haryana and Punjab (under-22) from December 4 to 6.
