Rampant racket in school certificates
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, November 25
The future of a large number of primary and middle level students is at stake, in view of a rampant racket in bogus certificates.

Rajkumar, a resident of Tigaon village here, has brought the issue under spotlight by highlighting the case of a fake certificate issued by one of the schools located here. In his representation sent to the top authorities, including the Education Minister, Secretary of the Haryana Education Board and the Crime Branch, the applicant has produced a photocopy of a transfer 0certificate (TC) issued by a school at Tigaon to a student.

While the certificate claims that the student, identified as Deepak, son of Rajesh Verma, had passed class fifth, the parents of the student were amazed when they failed to find the name of their son in the official list issued by the Block Primary Education Officer.

Like Deepak, many other students, who appeared in class fifth exam this year, found their name missing in the official list. It is learnt that the Hindi medium school, which issued the certificate, is recognised by the Haryana State Education Board. However, the student in question did not study in this school and was a pupil of an English medium school operating on the same campus.

Deepak Garg, a social activist, said that the students were paying a fee of at least Rs 400 per month for studying in an English medium school, but the school owner had given them the transfer certificate of another school and that too a “bogus” one. This was a case of cheating and school owners should be booked for the crime, he added. It is reported that the so-called English and Hindi medium schools were being run by the wife of a teacher of a government school.

The Faridabad Abhibhavak Ekta Manch suspects that there is a bigger racket and officials of the Education Department could also be involved in it. The manch has demanded that the Education Department should publish the list of recognised schools and those operating illegally. Strict action should be taken against schools which lack proper infrastructure and facilities, and yet admit students.

Meanwhile, at least 24 persons have been arrested in connection with a case of fake certificates at Hathin sub-division. As many as 175 students had reportedly been caught in March 2002: they were appearing in the matric exam on the basis of fake certificates. A case under Section 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B had been registered against the private school owner, its principal and an official of the Education Department.

Thewa is Roopa’s trademark and has become a ground for her to experiment on. Thewa was the 400-year-old Moghul Art Form of fusing 23K gold with coloured handmade glass. The art form was on the verge of extinction, when Roopa Vohra, a couture Jeweler, took up the revival of this art form as a challenge, about five years ago. Today, it is a Fashion Statement.

Meticulously crafted pieces, which are part of this range, are described as a “Ballad of Artistry and Craftsmanship” by the designer herself.
