Workshop focuses on medicinal herbs
Our Correspondent

Mohali, November 25
“Ayurveda, which is considered an ancient science of life, has to be systemised if it has to be globalised. There is also a need to go in for systematic cultivation of medicinal plants.”

These views were expressed by Prof C.K. Kokate, Vice-Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warrangal, in his keynote address delivered at the inaugural function of a national workshop on ‘Curriculum Development in Natural Products at Postgraduate Level’ at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) here today. Professor Kokate emphasised the use of biomedicinal and herbal drug formulations and standardisation of herbal drugs.

He said there was a need to revise curriculum at the postgraduate level in order to create human resources trained in conservation and commercial exploitation of medicinal and aromatic plants. There was also a need to create a cadre of trained personnel for the development of quality-assured polyherbal formulations and nutraceuticals of global standards.

Professor Kokate said the revision of curriculum was also necessary to provide expertise in commercial production of plant-based bulk drugs and to revive the ancient therapy of Ayurveda.

Professor N.K. Ganguly, Director-General, ICMR, in his inaugural address, said despite the biodiversity present in India, the research in natural products was mainly done in western countries. He asserted that students of this stream should protect the wealth of natural resources.

Dr C.L. Kaul, Director, NIPER, who presided over the function, said the natural products were playing an important role in the health care system of the developing countries. It is estimated that about 80 per cent of the population used these products. He said in India, where the traditional medicines had strong roots, there were a lot of opportunities for blending the modern health care with traditional wisdom. It was important to integrate the modern medicine, modern science and traditional medicines, he added.

Parking charges at grain market hiked
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 25
The Finance and Contract Committee of the Municipal Corporation today increased the parking charges by 10 per cent for the vehicles bringing vegetable, fruits and grocery items to the Sector 26 grain market. The increased rates would be applicable for one year, said Mr P.C. Sanghi, a member of the committee. An important agenda item to frame guidelines for allowing vendors in “apni mandis” was, however, deferred.

In the monthly meeting held under the chairmanship of the Mayor, the minimum bid money for the auction of parking lot at Sukhna Lake was increased to Rs 17.85 lakh. It was also decided that the parking area behind the Nirman cinema house in Sector 32 would be handed over to the theatre management for Rs 15,000 per month.

The committee decided to have 24 security personnel on contract for guarding the water works in sectors 12, 26, 32, 37 and 39 and Kajauli. Two agenda items — to recarpet the low carriageway from behind the Haryana mini-secretariat in Sector 17 to Madhya Marg and from behind Shivalikview Hotel Sector 17 to Matka Chowk were also approved at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation may raise a loan for paying over Rs 16 crore as compensation for delay in the allotment of a hotel site in Sector 35.

With the last date to pay the Rs 16 crore compensation ending on December 20, the corporation is now contemplating to raise a loan to make the payment.
