Signals blank MEG in Nehru hockey

New Delhi, November 16
Corps of Signals trounced MEG, Bangalore 4-0 in a Group D match of the Nehru Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Sunday.
Suresh Kumar, who scored a field goal in the third minute to open the scoring, rounded off the tally in the 63rd minute. In between, Paramjit Singh added the second goal in the eighth minute while Santosh Kumar scored the third goal, in the 61st minute.

In a Group A match, Railways warded off a stiff challenge from Pioneer Corps, Bangalore to record a narrow 3-2 victory.

Pioneer took the lead in the 20th minute when he converted a penalty corner while Raju pulled off the equaliser for Railways six minutes later.

On resumption, Iqbal Singh scored a field goal in the 40th minute to put Railways in the lead, and Savinder Singh enhanced the lead in the 55th minute. Three minutes later, Sunil Ekka reduced the margin for Pioneer. Railways then managed to protect their slender lead to emerge victorious.

In a Group B match, Indian Navy, Mumbai defeated Food Corporation of India (FCI), North Zone 3-1.

Amrit Kiro converted a penalty corner to open Navy’s account in the third minute. Lakhbir Singh drew parity just before the interval.

On resumption, P L Murugappan and M M Lokhanda struck in the 38th and 47th minute respectively to ensure Navy’s victory.

Classic Resort on a winning mode

Classic Golf Resort, the reigning McDowell’s Signature Champion Golf Club of India, began their defence of the title in a spirited way when they beat off a strong challenge from Delhi Golf Club and Rambagh Golf Club (Jaipur) at the North Zone regional finals played at the Classi Resort on Sunday.

Pitched against seven of the leading golf clubs of India, Classic emerged victorious with a team score of 140 against Delhi Golf Club’s 135 and Rambagh’s 132. All the finals will be played on December 20 among the four regional winners at the Jaypee Greens course. Wellingdon Golf Club has already won the West Zone Championship, while the East and South legs will be played in the next three weeks.

Scores: Classic: 140 (Amit Luthra 38, G S Nanda 27, Puneet Suri 31, Varun Chadda 40, Uday Kumar 31, Sanjay Suri 31). Delhi Golf Club: 135 (Ranjit Nanda 30, Tarun Kunzru 25, Y S Dadwal 35, Shunil Juneja 32, Manmohan Sethi 18 and Ajay K Jain 38).

Rambagh Club: 132 (Siddarth Sharma 29, S F Hara 27, G. S. Ranawat 33, Mohammed Kamran Shamshi 28, V K Godha 34, Vikram Singh 36).

Chandigarh (124), Lucknow (122), Noida (117), Jaypee Greens (104) and Aravalli Golf Clubs (93) are the other contenders in the fray.

Bodyguards roll into polo final

New Delhi, November 16
Bodyguards tossed out Zara to sail into the final of the Ratanada Cup Polo Championship. They will take on Gunners in the title clash on Monday. The match between Bodyguards and Zara ended in a 5-5 draw, but toss favoured Bodyguards.

Zara, who began with a one-goal handicap, opened their account in the first chukker through Satinder Garcha. Bodyguards slotted home two goals in the opening chukker to draw level (2-2). In the second chukker, both the teams scored one goal each, and in the last chukker, the teams scored two goals each.

Tarun Sirohi (4) and Sanjay Singh scored for the winners while Satinder Garcha (2) and Hamza Ali (2) found the target for Zara.

Delhi emerge North Zone champions

New Delhi, November 16
Hosts Delhi, by virtue of taking the first innings lead, took two points off Haryana in the three-day North Zone Cooch-Behar Under-19 Cricket Tournament at the Palam ground. This draw enabled them to emerge the zonal champions.

Delhi, batting first, scored 335 in their first innings and then dismissed Haryana for 151. Delhi then accumulated 250 for 8 in their second knock before the match was halted by rain and bad light.

But Delhi would have been in deep trouble had not Wilkins Victor played a vital knock for them, after they were reduced to 67 for 7. Victor was involved in a 142-run partnership for the eighth wicket and 101-run stand for the ninth wicket, with Ankur Garg. Delhi have taken their points tally to 14 out of a maximum 20.

Scores: Delhi (1st innings): 335 all out in 121.4 overs (Wilkins Victor 121, Mayank Tehlan 78, Ankur Garg 35, Sunny Singh 5 for 66).

Second innings: 250 for 8 in 69.1 overs (Abhinav Bali 102, Mayank Tehlan 66, Sachin Rana 6 for 49).

Lalit Rana bowls Sarvodaya to victory

Deadly bowling by Lalit Rana (5 for 20) and dashing knock of 40 by Amit Singh helped Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya (Lajpat Nagar) defeat Chinmay Vidyalaya by seven wickets and entered the quarter-final of the seventh H. S. Sistani Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament at the S. S. Khalsa School ground.

Scores: Chinmaya Vidyalaya: 110 all out in 23.2 overs (Aditya Dubey 30, Gaurav Gupta 17, Lalit Rana 5 for 20, Pradeep Sharma 3 for 20).

Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya: 115 for 3 in 11 overs (Amit Singh 40, Surender Choudhary 31 n o, Gaurav Gupta 3 for 25).

Damanjeet hits double ton

An unbeaten double century by Damanjeet Singh (214) and a fine supporting knock by Atul Kapoor (94) helped Pusa Youngsters beat Patel Nagar Gymkhana by 193 runs in the DDCA A-I Division League at the RSC ground.

Scores: Pusa Youngsters: 355 for 1 in 40 overs (Damanjeet Singh 214 n o, Atul Kapoor 94).

Patel Nagar Gymkhana: 172 for 9 in 40 overs (Kanwaljeet Singh 40, Nitin Madan 37, Madan Goswami 31, Mohd Rashid 4 for 32).

An all-round display (32 and 4 for 18) by Mukesh Marwah helped Essex Farms beat MTNL by 100 runs in a DDCA A-II Division League at the Yamuna Sports Complex ground.

SAR Group move up

SAR Group defeated Touchtel by 221 runs in the Eventus Cup Cricket Tournament.

Modern School enter basketball semis

Modern School defeated Bloom Public School 72-55, after leading by 39-14 at half time, to enter the semi-final of the Vidyawati Alagh Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Mira Model School court (Janakpuri). In other quarter-final matches, AFGJS beat St. Michael 73-54, Mt. St. Mary’s defeated Mira Model and Sachdeva defeated CSKM 56-41.

Monday’s fixtures: Modern School vs AFGJ; Mt. St. Mary’s vs Sachdeva School.
