Refresher course on mother and child care
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 16
To address issues like low infant mortality rate due to pre-mature low weight babies, the Chandigarh chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics today organised a refresher course on “Mother and Child Health for Nurses” at the Reproductive Child Health Centre in Sector 22.

This is the first time that the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) organised a continuing education programme on pre-natal, neo-natal and post-natal for nurses, who spend the maximum time taking care of the mother and newborn. “We realised that nurses formed an important component of healthcare. So, we decided to hold refresher courses to create awareness pertaining to prevention and treatment of diseases afflicting the infant,” explained Dr Shakuntala Lavasa, President of the society.

About 200 nurses from government and private hospitals, attended the programme, where they were informed about the practical aspects of nursing care, which could help reduce high infant mortality rate in India. “What we stressed was that there was the need to take care of the child right from the time of conception, when it comes in the womb,” said Dr Lavasa.

She said because of lack of awareness in maternal courses, the child was born with a number of complications and at times even nurses were unable to handle the situation. The objective of the programme was to instill confidence among the nurses and educate them about immunisation. Another issue that was highlighted was that mother’s milk was the safest to keep the child protected from all infections and diseases.

A manual, with the entire course content, was distributed to the nurses, which can prove be a useful companion for them.
